Re: How to explain ?

One doctor explained it to me as the thyroid is "sputtering" out and trying hard to produce enough hormone, but can't. Technically it is an autoimmune disease where the thyroid attacks itself...it is one of the underlying causes of hypothyroidism. My surgeon said it makes the thyroid "sticky and gooey" and bumpy. She told me I have it too and that is makes it more difficult to work with (when they remove it).

Re: How to explain ?

Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypoT. It's an autoimmune disorder in which auto-antibodies attack the thyroid gland and eventually completely destroy its ability to make thyroid hormones. It can only be definitively diagnosed by thyroid biopsy, but the presence of TPO and/or Tg antibodies in the blood, plus symptoms, pretty surely indicates its presence without the necessity of biopsy.

Re: How to explain ?

Thanks so much everyone

Niecsey , how you doing ?

I found out I had "Hashimoto's disease" after my operation to remove
half my thyroid ( back in May )

I'm not doing too bad , my specialist said I did need another higher dose
of my medication , he also said I was doing well and that my scar is looking good
( if a scar can look good lol)

AND he also said I MUST remember i'm not gonna feel fine straight away
and I need to give it time as it's a long process ( He is SO nice )
and to not push myself to hard ...

Thanks again , Sara xx
