Hashimoto's and Arthritis

I am 35 yo female; on 0.75 mcg Synthroid for 1 and 1/2 years. I am concerned I may also have arthritis. My symptoms are aching in both wrists and tenderness at last joint on index finger. It feels I've been bitten by something, it's so sore.

I have a great aunt that had Rheumatoid arthritis.

Does anyone have a history of arthritis with Hashimoto's? I'd love to hear your experience.

Thanks all.

Re: Hashimoto's and Arthritis

My grandmother had Hashis and my mother is HypoT and she has had RA for 5 years - really bad RA combined with OA. She might very well have Hashi's too, but the doctor never tested more than her TSH and put her on eltroxin.

There are a number of blood tests that can be done to help determine if you have RA. The main one is RA factor, but not everyone with RA will test positive for this. There is a new test however, called anti-CCP antibodies. These antibodies are present in many people with RA before they even begin to show symptoms.

Seeing as they are both autoimmune diseases and these tend to travel in families I wouldn't be suprized to hear that there are people who have a history of both.

Re: Hashimoto's and Arthritis

Hello.
My genes seem to be degenerated. A family weakness. Several aunts had both Hashimoto's and RA. One uncle had RA. Two of my siblings are affected; one with SLE and Sjogren's, one with RA and Hashimoto's. I have Hashimoto's (for almost 20 years), now a 'possible MS' and /or 'possible RA'. Anti-ccp is now somewhat high (58) according to the doctor, but has been both lower and higher. Frustrating, painful.
