Vocal Cords?

Has anyone else wen't back for your follow up from having your thyroid completely removed and had that dang thing put up your nose and down your throat and been told that you have calcium deposits or nodules on your vocal cords? I just found that out today...I have to have a check up in 2 months to check them again...He seems to think that they are due to me having a "big mouth" lol... after my thyroid surgery he told me not to talk alot or yell.... But.... I am a talkative i didn't listen that
as far as I have been able to find it's not something major...more so like what singers get from straing there voice...I know for sure they weren't there when he did my last surgery in June...he said back then he did clean them off..anyway...I wasn't sure if all these bizarre things keeping happening to "JUST" me... I can't win for

Re: Vocal Cords?

I am making a mental note of this post. I have surgery on th 27th of this month. I am a chatter box and a loan officer. I need my voice to take loan applications and explain the home loan process. (not real sure I have ever been quiet, husband says never)

Re: Vocal Cords?

Yeah..thats how I am...and I work in a assisted living I need my voice..most of the time I have to shout for some of them to hear me... After my surgeries my voice got really is somewhat deeper now..but nothing i can't live biggest problem is my memory now...I asked the doctor about and he said sometimes it comes with it... but yeah, 2 days after my last surgery I was yelling at the kids and my hubby...I would get so mad because my voice was so low that they couldn't hear me..I would try my best to yell...and i think that may have been what caused the nodule on my vocal cords...I know they weren't there a few months ago...
Why are you having your thyroid removed? If you don't mind me asking?

Re: Vocal Cords?

I have Hashimoto and a goiter. The thyroid is in a growth spurt right now and look like it waves at the people I talk to. The synthroid did not stop the growth so they are taking it out before it causes any more problems. I already cant swallow food that isint very small.

Re: Vocal Cords?

Just to add my two cents worth..... I recently had a portion of my trachea removed and the reason for the voice restriction is to limit the vibration going on to reduce the scar tissue. I don't know if that would hold true with your thyroid removal or not. You definitely would not want scar tissue building up and compressing your trachea, making it harder to breathe. And since the thyroid wraps around the front of the trachea, it could be for that reason. Make sure to ask your doctor to explain the reason why if they do put you on voice restriction. Hope your surgery goes well!!
