surgery for what? Thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism?
I'm not sure about thyroid cancer, but for a thyroidectomy for Graves/hyperthyroidism they typically give you SSKI or Lugol's solution to take for a few days prior to the surgery. This makes the thyroid gland less vascular and therefore makes it a much less bloody surgery. It also lowers thyroid hormone levels.
