Had My Appointment Today

I had my appointment today with the nurse practitioner. She was very knowledgeable, attentive and caring. What a welcome change!

She thought it was a good idea to start me on medication. To begin, I am on the smallest dose of Snythroid. I do not have the med near me, so I am not sure of the dose. She wants me to return in four weeks to check my levels and adjust the med accordingly. She thought a TSH of 1 or possibly lower would be a good goal.

Does this seem like a good plan to you all? Do most people start on the low dose and build up gradually? How long does it take to see any improvement? As I am sure you guys understand, I am beyond excited to be taken seriously and to get help.

As always, all opinions and advice are welcome. Thank you!

Re: Had My Appointment Today

Well I started in April on the smallest dose of synthroid(25mg) and had no increase. Everyone on here says I should be at a much higher dose. I agree so I added a little to my dose. I feel ok so far. You really have to stay on top of things or get pushed along like I seem to be. Good luck its a long journey with no quick fix....

Re: Had My Appointment Today

Ticker it can take weeks to see a noticeable difference if you're taking synthroid (it is only T4 and this acts more slowly than meds which contain T4 and T3 like Armour Thyroid). It is customary to start off low and build up to your optimal dose - too much, too soon can be a real shock to your system, espcially if it's been w/o support for a long time. Then again, some people feel better sooner, if they are sensitive to the T4 (I know I am one of these). Just be warned that often you feel good for a while and then feel bad, usually a sign you need to increase that dose.

I do hope she is monitoring more than just your TSH. Have you had your Free Ts measured at all? Once you begin treatment they are the numbers you need to follow and adjust your dose according to. Often you'll find people who's TSH is nearlly suppressed before their Free Ts move up and allow them to feel good.

Cheers,
Nat

Re: Had My Appointment Today

Thank you both for your responses.

Heddy, do not give up on finding someone to help you. I know it is frustrating but it is a doctor's job to help. Keep trying. I have heard that osteopaths are often better because they don't always rely solely on test results.

Nat, how do you know if you are sensitve to T4? By feeling better quickly? Is it possible to feel more tired after taking the med for a few days? Also, can hypothryroid cause bad muscle pain?

I had all the blood tests done at the end of August. She said she will retest everything when I return in a month.

Nat, I am very curious how you chose your screen name--I love it!!
