is hashimoto's a "chronic illness"? (re: flu shot)

i was reading the flu shot guidelines from the CDC about who should get a flu shot, and they mention adults and children with a chronic illness. the examples they give are heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancers, HIV/AIDS, etc. so, here's my question: is my hashimoto's thyroiditis a chronic illness?

i've had a flu shot the last two years, and i'm concerned about not having one this year. my fear is that my immune system is already wigged out, as evidence by the autoimmune disease, and will i be able to fight off the flu as sick as i am right now? i'm especially concerned when i remember what i read about hashi's patients reporting more infections.

thoughts?

A chronic illness is something that is long lasting, so yes, a thyroid disorder is a chronic illness.

Yes it is chronic illness. The problem is that not much research is done for thyroid because it doesn't kill you right away. It is not like diabetes that can kill you, or put you in a comma. Not many people know about thyroid problems (even doctors). And yes, we are suceptible to more infections.

Hi Curlyroller,

I have Hashi's but received a flu shot because of my asthma. I'm not sure whether or not Hashi's falls into the category of those requiring flu shots. Have you checked with your primary care physician?
