Lightbulb Thyroid gland and enlarged tonsils? Any link?

Hi everyone, hope all is well with you!!
I really need some feedback... in regards to my thyroid and my enlarged tonsils.

Growing up I constantly had tonsil infections... However around age 19 I had one severe tonsil infection that left my tonsils completely scarred. They feel like 2 large marbles on the sides of my neck.
I don't get many infections anymore (I'm almost 23 now) however my tonsils are permanently scarred. I saw an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist who didn't do any tests but examined my tonsils and said they were just scarred. He said I could have them removed- but if they didn't bother me too much then it would be best to avoid surgery (quite painful at my age he says).

About 6 months ago I learnt that I had Hypothyroidism... My thyroid gland was enlarged- not severly and nothing to be concerned about.

I'm curious if my thyroid may be the cause of my permanently swollen tonsils? Could my tonsils be a sign of another autoimmunity that I may have?

What can I have tested to make sure that nothing is wrong and that my scarred tonsils are nothing to be worried about??

Thank you so much!!

Stacey

Re: Thyroid gland and enlarged tonsils? Any link?

When I read your post, it reminded me of my daughter. She is 31 years old and she had tonsilitis many times when she was young. Now she has hypothyroidism.

There could be some link between them. Who knows?

I can't help you on your questions sorry

Yup, same thing here. I had chronic tonsilitis from age 16-25. Had tonsils out at age 25. Had severe fatigue and sore throats starting at age 24. After six long years was finally diagnosed with hypo....stupid docs told me I was depressed. I actually do think there is a connection. I believe that the tonsils are so close to the thyroid and they get large, inflamed with thyroid problems.

Oh, I forgot to say that when my doc took out my tonsils, he said they were the worst, most infected tonsils he had ever seen. This was one year into my severe fatigue.

Re: Thyroid gland and enlarged tonsils? Any link?

I had my tonsils out when I was 16 yo. This after lots of throat infections since childhood. I too was wondering if there was a connection to thyroid problems and throat problems...in particular surgery to remove tonsils. I do remember the nurses saying that I lost alot of blood while I was in recovery.

Who knows the answer. But I personally think that there is a connection.

When I was 18 or 19 I started having panic attacks, and still do. I wasn't tested until the birth of my second child...in 2001. Thats when I was dx'd. No telling how long it was going on. Which may be why it is so hard to level out now.

i think that there is a connection too!!! i am 25 and i have a pituatary tumor and thus all the the hormones that it affects are messed up. i have a very underactive thyroid and i a was just told that i have to get my tonsils out!! at25!!!! i think that there is def something going on there. i was thinking that myself. i was thinking since i have underactive and it is a goiter (enlarged) and my tonsils were enlarged too that there had to be something to that....

Re: Thyroid gland and enlarged tonsils? Any link?

Thanks for the responses!!! I guess there really isn't anything I can do? My tonsils don't hurt enough that I would want to go through the pain of having them removed. It's definitely an uncomfortable feeling in my throat, but maybe it will improve as my hypo symptoms improve?
