Question synthroid and birth control (female question)

hello everyone,

I have a question about the interraction with these two. I have been having problems with skipping menstrals and getting cysts so the doctor put me on birth control. We waited to see if the synthroid would level me out but haven't had any luck. I'm 30 and have never took bc before, so I have alot of questions about it. But my main question is how does it mix with my synthroid. I just started it last night and take my synthroid in the morning. I also went to the doctor to get my blood work done yesterday. I ask for :
Free T3
Free T4
Total T3
Thyroglobin Antibodies
Thyroxine Peroxidase Antibodies

I'll be sure to post them as soon as I get results. But if they adjust my meds from the blood test done before I started the b.c. will it effect what my dose should be with it?

Re: synthroid and birth control (female question)

Since you take them separately from each other, you are doing the right thing and there shoule be very littel effect on your thyroid levels. If the BC has estrogen in it, you might need a slight adjustment, but you might not. the only thing to do is wait and see.

I am not a doctor, nor have I ever played one on TV...

Re: synthroid and birth control (female question)

I had a bad issue with this. Taking BC Pills, even if more than 8 hours apart (I took them together on advice of a dumb doc then took them separately because I didn't feel right- 6 months later still felt like crap- I vented somewhere around here), slam dunked my levels so low that I felt a barrage of symptoms. So get tested for sure because mine came back low after I finally got back to the doc.
Hypo from birth (6/78), due to absence of thyroid gland.
