My dog is gaining weight on levothyroxine

It's unreal. She's gained probably 2 or 3 lbs since starting levo about a month ago. That doesn't seem like a lot but it is on her frame. She's a Jack Russel/toy fox terrier mix and her weight should be about 10 lbs. I'd say she weighs about 13 lbs now. She is eating about the same I think as she did before. I feed her Iams or Science Diet only. Never the cheap fatty store bought stuff. Her energy level is about the same. If you know Jack Russel's, you know they're hyper by nature. She's on 100 mcgs levothyroxine twice a day.
Any thoughts on the weight gain?

Re: My dog is gaining weight on levothyroxine

Maybe she needs a higher dose? I know she hasn't been on it that long though right? Can dogs be on synthroid? I like the synthroid much better than the levoxyl, I think it took care of more of my symptoms such as weight gain.
Hard to say.
Maybe you could have her tested again just to see if the meds are working right.
I am actually going to have one of my babies tested for thyroid problems as she keeps biting on her feet and I've read that is a symptom. She's a husky mix and is usually very active but has seemed down in the dumps lately. I will see if it's an allergy thing too.
Best of luck to you and your poochie.

That is too weird! Not only do we worry about ourselves, we have to worry about our dogs. My dog also bites her feet and then licks them. I heard that was allergy related. Are the thyroid medicine prices for dogs pretty much the same for us? Too bad we can't get them on our insurance. Hah.

I feel like licking my feet and biting them too....maybe it is simply the reaction we would have to hypo...that is if we could!

Seriously now...my friend's Jack Russel also did that until the vet suggested washing his feet after he came in from outside...tender feet pads and picking up 'stuff' from the grass. It's a thought! Booties could work!

You're lucky if you can bend that far. lol I'm not so fortunate although I don't think I'd like to try that. lol
My baby doesn't have that problem with the feet. A lot of dogs are very sensitive to pesticides and fertilizers and that can cause the biting and licking too.

Re: My dog is gaining weight on levothyroxine

Nipsy's only been on her meds for a very short time and yes they cost about the same as my meds. But the pharmacisit figured the cheapest way for me to get it. He filled a three month supply instead of one and that brought it down some. He also did 200mcg tabs that I break in half and give half in the morning and half at night and that makes it a bit cheaper too. I think I paid about $50 for a 3 month supply.
The only indication we had that something was wrong was that she was having seizures. I've never read this in any book or anything regarding humans and thyroid disorders but there's a lot in veteranary articles about the seizures being a symptom of hypothyroidism. If you search canine hypothyroidism, you'll find as much, if not more, info than searching for human hypothyroidism. The veteranary sites are GREAT!

Bosmom
I'm sorry you're having pooch problems. I guess animals can gain on this
med just like some humans do.

My dog licks her legs constantly...which causes a fungus to grow on the
back of her legs.I have to wash her in a medicated shampoo. Her thyroid
tests were ok though.

Re: My dog is gaining weight on levothyroxine

I gained weight when I increased my Armour dosage cause I was hungrier. I went from 60 to 90mgs. I have gone down to 75mgs and I find it easier to loose weight. I guess if you have the doggy's blood tested you will find out if he needs more or less.

My Sassy is hypo and takes Soloxine twice a day. She never has lost weight with the replacement hormone, but she has not gained either. I'm guessing that her follow up labs might show that your JR needs an increase in meds maybe?

Hi there! I knew you would respond to this since you have a hypo baby too. How are your babies?
I've never heard of Soloxine. Is that synthetic t4? My Nipsy takes the same generic levo (different dose) as I do. I worry about her because of the seizures she's had and she has a bad leg thanks to a dog who attacked her a few years ago. The extra weight is bad for her arthritis in that leg. She can't jump as high as she used to and I've noticed her stumbling every once in a while. We laughed the first few times but I'm getting a bit concerned now. It's still funny though when she runs into the kitchen and slides across the floor. lol
I think the vet will change her meds when I take her back. I'm going to ask about Soloxine. I have the feeling that what's working for me isn't working for Nipsy.
