Allergic reaction to levothyroxine?

I have been taking 50 mcgs of levothyroxine for about 5 months now. I have been recently diagnosed with Hashi's and am hypo. Not sure if I do have any hyper symtoms at times. This is all so new to me and I am learning. Anyway, I have developed this little rash on my leg right above my ankle. It has these little bumps and itches like crazy. I have scratched so much that it bleeds.

Normally my skin is extremely dry. In the winter it cracks and bleeds. Nothing seem to help. I have recently had an outbreak of psoriasis on my hands that is driving me nuts. I was 16yrs old an pregnant with my first child the last time I had an outbreak like this. At that time, it even got under my fingernails and they fell off!

I am allergic to just about every tree and grass there is, dust mites, mold spores and a few other things. I am lactose intolerant.

I have had two different docs just look at this rash. One said it looked like a possible food allergy and wants me to do more allergy testing The other said that it just looked like some type of allergy and I would need to follow up with a dermatologist (sp?). If my memory is correct, I think this little rash that is now spreading developed about the same time that I started taking my meds.

Has anyone experienced this before or know someone who has?

Thanks,
Kathy

Re: Allergic reaction to levothyroxine?

I also have itchy areas. Big red spots that are flaky (gross-I know!)
Mine are on both shoulders and my belly button ...
I have tried EVERYTHING.......my endo says it may be vitaligo, and to see a dermatolgist, but honestly, I really do not want to add another doc to my schedule. It is hard enough dealing with a non-cooperative endo.
I tried anti-histamine to help with the itch, but it did not work. I read it helps some people. There are alos several anit-itch creams that may work so that you at least don't scratch 'till you bleed.... Also, you may want to try cocoa butter lotion.....

Re: Allergic reaction to levothyroxine?

Kathy,
Yes I too developed a rash and itching after one company changed their
fillers in Levothyroxine. More problems developed. I am hypo.hyshis with
only half of my thyroid gland left. I was fine until the company changed
the fillers. I did alot of research on fillers in levothyroid and have been
on a different brand for 4 months now. I was miserable with the previous one.
I still feel itchy at times so hope its not coming back. In the archves there
is some info on fillers that may help. I hope you get better. I hate to feel
itchy. I have had to cut cost due to less work from being sick so I had
to stop internet so I am on someone elses computer, but check the boards
every other day when possible. Take Care suem
