thyroidism, pregnancy, test results, etc....

Hi everyone! I usually post to the infertility board.. so I am new to this one!
Here is a bit of my story: Recently I have been feeling like my body is rebeling against me! That sounds terrible, but it feels true Anyway, I just visited the dr. late friday afternoon, and he mentioned I might have a problem with my thyroid, so I thought I would post a few questions.....

1. Has anyone heard of or developed themselves thyroid issues after a pregnancy (it ended in m/c)? How common is this?

2. I have had a significant weight gain since around February and cannot get it off! Also, I am so tired even after a full nights sleep. Is this commonly related to thyroidism?

3. My dr. drew blood late friday afternoon and I should be getting the results today... what are some things I should know about the numbers and reading the results?

Thanks in advance for any help you'all give! I will keep you posted as well, and if it turns out to be my thyroid, I know I will be a permenant part of this online community and will share more of my story! Thanks again!

1 - It's VERY common to develop thyroid problems after pregnancy. My mom had problems with her thyroid, but after she had me they went all to hell.

2 - Yes, being fatigued all the time is a symptom of hypothyroidism..

3 - Do you know what specific tests he ran? Get a copy of the results, and the "normal" ranges for your lab. Post them and someone here can help you analize them.

Re: thyroidism, pregnancy, test results, etc....

Yes, those symptoms are classically hypothyroid.
One other thing you should know... hypoT often causes miscarriage. So it's likely the problem didn't develop following the miscarriage but was there before it.
You might want to consider postponing any more pregnancies until you reach optimum thyroid hormone levels.

I hope the doc is running TSH, free T4, free T3... and very important - thyroid antibodies, especially TPO and Tg. TPO antibodies have been associated with miscarriage and preterm birth.
Let us know what happens.
