I am having an optic scan tomorrow and Im not sure the difference between that and an Ultrasound
I know it involves an injection but Im not 100% clear on what to expect.

I've never heard of an optic scan. Do you have Grave's with eye problems?
Nuclear medicine,CT and MRI can all involve an injection depending
on the exam you are having.
She said optic scan and I spoke to the people carrying out. Basically it shows the function of the Thyroid and takes a picture of the whole neck. But thats all I know apart from an injection is involved!!! I have looked it up and cant find any info.
My eye doctor asked me to have one as he thinks I have Grave's disease. It somehow has something to do with the optic nerve and in Grave's disease can cause blurred or double vision.
I had it done today. Basically I was injected in the arm with something (not iodine) and had to wait 20 minutes. I then sat under a machine which Zoomed over and took 4 pics of the thyroid. I could see a screen which had them showing up in red.
I was meant to have bloods done today too but apparently I was supposed to fast for 16 hours and was only told by the doc not to eat breakfast. I was told I cant drink either. Is that the case? I cant drink anything for 16 hours?

That's interesting but strange that there is nothing about it on the net.

I've never heard that before either...what labs are you having?I would
think that drinking water wouldn't interfer with lab tests.
Calcium (ca)
Free T3 (ft3)
Thyroid stimulating hormone
Calcitonin
Pth Intact Whole molecule
Gut hormone Profile
Just a couple of questions:
1) What are the above testing for?
2) What will the Thyroid uptake scan show the doctor?
Thanks
Water may interfere with the gut hormone profile I don't know about #5
The thyroid scan and RAIU are done to determine the cause of hyperthyroidism whether it's from the whole gland or from nodules.
Mine was from the entire gland hence my elevated antibodies
have you had your antibodies checked yet?
Nope, the only check I had was a TFT which just showed if I was hyperthyroid or not but apparently that simple test was not sufficent to tell if the nodule is createing symptoms.

Do you have the results of the calcitonin test yet??? This test may help
to determine the etiology of your tumor while you are waiting for the biopsy results.
It is elevated in several types of tumors Medullary thyroid as you mentioned, insulinomas,VIPomas(intestinal ) and lung. Not to scare you
I just think your doc is being very thourough and covering all bases.
I have not had the test yet, I was supposed to but they told me the wrong info regarding fasting so Im waiting to rearrange.
Can I ask what the results of this could indicate? Can a high level suggest anything other than a malignant medollry tumor?
Can I also ask if a FBC shows anything relateing to malignancy, such as white cell count and Platelets ?
Thanks
Do you mean CBC? White blood cells are elevated in infections,I've been
told low WBC indicates virus, platelets have more to with blood clotting.
RBC,Hematocrit and Hemoglobin can be related to anemia.
There are a lot of other tests included in a CBC that I don't know much
about.
The bloods I had originally were a Full Blood Count which I got back all as normal and my gp told me that maligant tumors usually do show something up in the bloods.
can an increase in calcitonin mean something beside a malignancy? Also can a Thyroid maligancy be a secondary tumor from elsewhere?

There is a test called sed rate that can detect inflammatory changes in
the body but it's not specific.. just a kind of red flag to check out other
things.
That was all I found about increased calcitonin and thyroid tumors
calcitonin also involves bone density and calcium levels in the blood.
Some of the other tests he did for calcium are also to check the
parathyroid.
I believe thyroid cancers are all primary with mets to lymph nodes and
in rare cases lung, bone and brain BUT medullary is actually more common
in women than men unless it is inherited.
Thanks again for this. I have been looking for the effects an increase in calcitonin causes, but so far only find dirreah.
Another thing I wondered, I have also not had my blood tests done yet for Gut hormone profile, pth intact whole molecule, Free T3 and Thyroid stimpulating hormone.
I wondered that these can reveal and if they are null and void since the nodule is cold?
Does the nodule being cold mean its either just nothing or maligant or could there be something else causeing it?
