Question high tsh levels 4 years after thyroidectomy
Hi. I am confused. I had a total thyroidectomy 4 years ago, (thyroid cancer), have been on meds ever since. A couple months ago my tsh levels started elevating, in the 14 range. My doctor upped my dose of synthroid from 150 to 175, and my tsh test test a month later came back at 28! How can this happen? My t3 and t4 are in the normal range. Any comments? Thanks in advance for your help.

How can you have TSH if you don't have a thyroid? Or did they leav some of it in?

TSH comes from the pituitary gland located somewhere in the back of the head near the neck" I think " so even if you dont have thyroid it will still try to push tsh to stimulate the thyroid that is there or use to be....
Just removing the thyroid doesnt involve removing the pituitary gland....

I had total T too...so I have to keep my TSH suppressed too.

Okay...taking wild stab here:

Maybe your meds were sub-potent...or you had some sort of absorption hinderence. Or...perhaps you forgot to take meds? Perhaps you didn't really hit the sweet spot when you thought you had...and still needed more meds for suppression..?

The thing we all worry about is that the gland starts growing back. That would be cause for major freaking out.

I hope you get this straightened out

I thought of two more things it could be...

How about...you gained a lot of weight...or you found your "sweet spot" during the warm season?

Thanks for the messages. I made an appointment today w/ my Endo, have just been seeing my regular doc this year. I do take the meds daily, and I haven't gained any weight. I know the numbers can vary somewhat, but am concerned that I had this large jump up after increasing the meds. I didn't really think about it growing back, I did all the treatments after surgery.
By the way, I am 43 and female!
