Severe water retention

I am new to the board and newly diagnosed as hypothyroid. I'm on Synthroid right now and although I'm much better than I was 6 weeks ago (when I could barely stay awake for more than 3 hours straight) I'm still not my old self.

I am being patient as they adjust the dosage levels. But I'm having a hard time dealing with the severe water retention.

I gained 6 lbs. this week and I know it's water.

I've increased the amount of water I drink each day (up to 3 quarts now) because I read that it will help to start flushing out my system.

Is there anything else I can do to relieve this bloating. It's making me feel so fat and that in turn is beginning to make me depressed and I've been trying SO hard to stay cheerful and not let this get to me.

I really don't want to start taking diuretics and I heard they can be harmful anyway.

Any suggestions would be so much appreciated. Thanks!!

(This board has been SO much help to me. To know that I'm not alone makes all the difference.)
