HypoT & missed period

Hey ladies - I need help.
Was diagnosed over 12 years ago, but after my endo wasn't on my insurance anymore, just let my reg doc keep up with it. BIG MISTAKE. This doc only checked my tsh level and I didn't know any better. Well since my thyroid was shutting down and I would only mention it when I was sore, he would take my blood then. I now know that that was when my thyroid was trying to work and spilling out then, so my tsh levels were looking hyperT - so he would lower my dosage.
All said - I found a wonderful internist last year that is slowly getting me regulated with Synthroid and Cytomel.
In the fall I missed a period for the first time in my life (except when pg), so I was shocked. The next one was right on schedule. Now let me say that my dosage had just been upped.
Now I am late again (my DH had the big V so I know I'm not pg) and my dosage of Cytomel was upped again - but only from 7.5 to 10.
So, is this part of the disease and has anyone else had period issues when getting regulated?! My doc says I'm was to young to be peri-menopausal at 37. Any advice would be appreciated.
THANKS!

Re: HypoT & missed period

I'm 19 and the reason i was diagnosed was because i missed 3 periods in a row. I had never missed a period in my life either, and i knew i wasn't pregnant. I still havent gotten my period, but the gyno doesnt want to give me provera, he wants me to wait 2 months to see if i start it on my own after my thyroid gets regulated.

Re: HypoT & missed period

To the body, a change in thyroid levels could indicate a crisis or famine, and that would be the wrong time to get pregnant, so ovulation, and your period, are often put on hold for a while. To accomplish this magical feat of natural adaptation, many things come into play. The hypothalamus detects how much thyroid hormone is in th blood and MAY tell the pituitary to alter levels of FSH and LH, putting the ovulation and period on hold. Meanwhile, there are thyroid hormone receptors on the ovaries, too. When the ovaries detect a change in levels or levels that are too low or too high, they can also alter their hormone production estrogen and progesterone), further affecting whether you ovulate or have a period.

Re: HypoT & missed period

Mellybean,
I wouldn't take the Provera last time either although my Gyno gave me 2 different prescriptions for it - one the first period I missed and the second when my 2nd period was 2 days late. I wadded it up and threw it in my purse. I did finally start about 7 days after the 2nd period was due. And I am now looking for a new Gyno too.
But see the strange thing for me is that prior to my starting to get regulated on new meds, I had massive hemorraging-type periods that came every 21-24 days. So bad, that I had to have to D&Cs to try and control it.
Now that my thyroid numbers are looking better, they have really slacked back to what I would consider normal. So, I was thinking it was more of a hyperT problem and if I am over-medicated. Most of my other symptoms have faded, except the weight. It's definately still here and apparently not going anywhere - ha!
Anybody else?

Re: HypoT & missed period

Meep,
So do you think that my levels are too high now? Or am I still getting regulated?
I had to cancel this last 6-wk appt (have been getting them every 6 wks since may)due to meeting at work. They now can't get me in until March - so would it be bad to wait another 6 weeks and skip this one. I am on the cancellation list for him, so hopefully I will get a call before March. It's just that I have seen him EVERY 6 weeks since my first visit.
I am going to try and get a copy of all my blood tests when I go as well, so I can keep better track of everything.
So - what do you suggest? You seem to be one of the thyroid-gurus here.
THANKS!

Without seeing those test results, I can't tell you anything.
