Hi All
On my recent scan my thryoid absorbed I believe its said 21% after 24 hours which is well in the norm. THe section that was outlined where the nodule is showed "somewhat diminished uptake" It was conluded that the nodule was not fully functioning and should consider removing it.
Now my question is - is this considered cold since it looks like there was uptake but not at the percentage as the rest of the thyroid? Does this also mean that this nodule functions a bit like a thyroid thus producing thyroid hormone?

I know only that cold nodules don't take up much iodine - they don't produce much thyroid hormone. Hot nodules take up lots of iodine, and are areas where hormone is produced.

Cold nodules can become cancerous, and it is therefore suggested to keep an eye on them, either by Fine Needle Aspiration, and/or removal. Almost all cancers are from cold nodules, but not all cold nodules are cancerous.

Hot nodules are not usually a cause for concern.
