After 6 months of feeling generally lousy, and having hot flashes for the last month of that time, our doctor did a thyroid test on our 15 yr old daughter and it came back as HYPER-thyroid. She did another test to be sure and it showed the same thing. Yesterday she had an ultrasound of the thyroid and it is normal- and the dr. is referring us to an endocrinologist. What should we expect there? What can they do that our dr. didn't? and what are the possible causes of this condition, when the ultrasound is normal?

what are her levels and what exactly did the ultrasound show?

Hi, Eric,

I"m sorry I don't know her levels offhand; our last dr. visit was a week ago and being unfamiliar with those numbers anyway, I just can't recall them. They, along with the ultrasound results, are being mailed to me to take to the endocrinoligist. I do remember the dr. saying the numbers were "borderline". As for the ultrasound, the dr. told me today that there are no nodules and the size of the thyroid is normal for her age.

Does this tell you anything?

If your daughter does indeed have hyperthyroidism, the best advice I can give you is to *NOT* let them do radioactive iodine on her to kill her thyroid gland.

There is a LOT to learn about thyroid disease and it's treatments that the medical profession WILL NOT tell you. Go into treatment with your eyes WIDE OPEN and trust your gut instincts.

From the research I have already done, I have to day your advice is good! I have already decided that at age 15, I really want to weigh all the options for her before even considering something so permanent and radical.

I am still wondering if anyone has had these same results (hyperthyroid but with a normal ultrasound) and what your ultimate diagnosis was.
