It's all greek to me...help with US results?

Hi all. First wanted to thank those who responded to my first post regarding TSH levels. I appreciated it.

My doctor has decided not to send me for the thyroid scan since that would mean coming off my thyroid meds for 3 to 6 weeks. Instead he has sent me to a specialist. I received my Ultrasound results and this is what it says:

"Mild inhomogeneity overall. Left lobe is smaller than right with left measuring 2.5x1.1x0.8 and right measuring 3.8x1.3x1.5. There is a very questionable slightly echogenic nodule in the superior pole of the left lobe measuring 4.8x2.5x3.9"

So can anyone tell me, in layman's terms, what this means? I can't even make the appointment with the specialist until Monday as they are closed for the weekend and I've never been a patient person to begin with...

Also I have noticed for about a week now my throat is tender and my neck is sore. It feels as though there is something there, and today my lymph nodes are swollen and painful. I know that I may just be getting sick, but I feel fine otherwise. Perhaps this is psychosomatic? Any input would be apprecited,
Thanks!

Adhl

Re: It's all greek to me...help with US results?

Hi,
I don't know how much help I can be but I have had ultrasounds....if those measurements are in cm then I can tell you mine to compare -
right lobe 1.5 x 1.6 x 3.0 homogenous
left lobe 1.1 x 1.3 x 3.2 cm homogenous
also on right lobe: hypoechogenic nodule measuring 0.7 x 0.7 x 1.8 cm.

Since that report I have had about four other ultrasound as the number of nodules kept increasing. Nodules are a pretty common thing to have - not a normal thing, but quite common. 95% of all nodules are benign. Sometimes if there is just one, or if it is large (I'm not sure what they define as large - I heard mixed numbers) they may do a biopsy of it or a radioactive iodine scan - which is a type of x-ray for the thyroid (I've not had either yet even though it's been almost two years since they discovered the first nodule with ultrasound.

Looks like my right lobe and your left lobe are about the same size - I'm a little confused by the dimensions they give for your nodule since it appears that your left lobe is smaller than the dimensions...So I'm sorry I can't explain that - Usually the total size of the lobe with the most nodules has been the largest in overall size for me....

Sorry I can't be more help - I have been treated with synthroid for the nodules - my TSH was never elevated but the nodules sure made me very ill with hypothyroid symptoms. The synthroid has helped some things a lot and some not so much....

Maybe someone else has dimensions more similar to what you have posted - Sorry I can't be more help....
Best wishes to you and I hope everything gets better for you....
Kathy

PS Sometimes my lymph nodes get sore in my neck too - and I certainly have discomfort with the nodules - It's prudent to have them all checked out....

Thanks

Thanks for the information, makes me feel much better. I think the "worst" thing is all the waiting. Well, hopefully it won't take too long to get an appointment with the endocrinologist and I'll have some results. Thanks again!
