salivary gland problems?

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but my search function is not working.

Has anyone heard about having long-term problems with salivary glands after radioactive iodine treatment? I was treated about three years ago. I remember them saying that my glands might be sore for a short time, but I don't recall them being so at the time. However....I have had flare-ups over the past few years of what I thought was jaw pain. Dental exams have been negative and on a recent visit to my ENT he said I have swollen salivary glands which are causing my pain. I was just wondering if this could all be due to the radioactive iodine and if anyone on this board has a similar problem.

I'm on my third round of antibiotics, after which my ENT says he will do a CT scan to see what is going on. This flare-up has been gong on two months now and the pain is really getting to me. He mentioned possibly removing the gland and it sounds good to me right now! If anyone has any similar condition, what are you doing to treat it?

Re: salivary gland problems?

yes, that is one of the side effects of the RAI. I did not have this happen to me, but I worked in the dental field for many years and saw a few patients that were suffering from this. Explain what is going on to your dentist and I would follow his advice on this.

Re: salivary gland problems?

I've had an enlarged parotid gland on the left side since all my severe thyroid symptoms began - about 18 years ago. It has taken me almost that long to find out that it is not uncommon for hashi patients to have some involvement of the parotid glands - the docs I saw over the years didn't have a clue about it. I've had no RAI, or anything like that. It is very painful, and refers pain into my jaw, ear, and neck. The ENT I saw last week checked it and just said, "Yes, of course it would be painful." No advice on what to do with it at all..... A year ago, I saw a different ENT, and he said it was just "Asymmetrical" - like I was born that way or something. Not true - so, I quit seeing him.

I even read somewhere that some of the antibodies directed toward the thyroid gland in Hashi's might be produced in the parotids, as well as the thyroid gland itself.

Re: salivary gland problems?

I have only been diagnosed with thyroiditis and have never had RAI, but I have had salivary gland symptoms for the past 2 years. When it first flared up it was very painful under my chin and would swell while eating. Very scary to say the least. One doctor tells me it is Sjogren's Syndrome since I have seriously dry eyes and another tells me that inflammation of the thyroid gland is what causes the pain and swelling. I have only taken a couple rounds of thyroid meds to help with the thyroiditis, but no other meds and it has improved a great deal over the months.

The only thing that I found which gave me relief was an ice pack. Just a few minutes and it really releives the pain and swelling. You might want to give it try and see if it helps you while you are working with your doctor about what is going on and what you should do about it.

I hope you are better soon!

Re: salivary gland problems?

i've also got swollen parotid glands. they swelled a few years after my thyroid.
i had an mri and both radiologists said it looks like scar tissue but they couldn't really tell what it was.
i never thought about it being related to the thyroid.
