Stopping thyroid medication

Just curious. If I stop my thyroid medication would my thyroid go back to the way it was before? My thyroid was still working when I started my medication. I would like to try a more natural healing remedy like rake' or healing touch and start seeing a holistic doctor.

Re: Stopping thyroid medication

I guess it would depend on what caused your thyroid problems in the first place. If you have autoimmune thyroiditis, then your thryoid gland has been damaged by your immune system to some extent. If your thyroid gland has not suffered additional damage since you started treatment, it might be able to produce the same amount of thyroid hormone that it did before. But it's also quite possible that it won't be able to produce as much hormone as before. If that's the case, you will feel worse if you stop taking your medication.

If your thryoid problems were caused by correctable issues (too little iodine or too much soy, for example), your thyroid may be able to recover and function normally once those issues are corrected.

Well if you do any changes with the thyroid, make sure you get regular labwork done and tell the Dr. what your plans are. Every thyroid case is different but you must be careful when making changes with the synthroid as the thyroid is a very important gland. When in doubt, always ask the Dr.

Um, all I know is that my endo flips out at me for missing even one dose, apparently it really skews the numbers when I get my labs drawn. So don't do anything without your doctor's supervision.
