I guess it would depend on what caused your thyroid problems in the first place. If you have autoimmune thyroiditis, then your thryoid gland has been damaged by your immune system to some extent. If your thyroid gland has not suffered additional damage since you started treatment, it might be able to produce the same amount of thyroid hormone that it did before. But it's also quite possible that it won't be able to produce as much hormone as before. If that's the case, you will feel worse if you stop taking your medication.
If your thryoid problems were caused by correctable issues (too little iodine or too much soy, for example), your thyroid may be able to recover and function normally once those issues are corrected.
