soft peeling nails, hypo or hyper?

My medication was increased 4 weeks ago and although my nails were bad prior to this increase my nails are really soft now and peel off. I was told in the past that soft nails was a sign of hyper thyroid, which i can tell you i'm not and was a reason why I would have reduced my thyroid medication in the past.

Are soft peeling nails a sign of hypo too, or is this some form of an adrenal problem. Anyone any ideas? Many thanks

Re: soft peeling nails, hypo or hyper?

Before I had my surgery for nodules and hashi's that is one thing I had really bad. My fingernails would just peel in layers. It is very frustrating. I have noticed that either because of the synthroid or just getting rid of my thyroid, that my nails are very strong now and grow very well.

What med are you taking and what is your diagnosis?

Karen

Hi Karen

I had a benign module and half my thyroid removed in 1987. I've been on thyroxine ever since. Since 1997 I've felt woeful though and have been reducing my T4 due to medical advice, although recent past blood tests have shown i've gone hypo (after going onto Armour) - yet I felt better - so figure that one out. I'm now on a higher thyroxine dose of 200mcg but my nails are peeling off, they weren't that good prior to increasing my dose and are very thin and peel and break.

When I am hyper, my fingernails get very thin and break easy. When just a little hypo, they also get thin and break easy. When I am very very hypo, they get very thick and peel easy.

Does this make sense?LOL

One endo of mine told me it was a good diagnosis sign?! Obviously not that good!
