Does anyone have sore throat with their thyroid problems

Hello

I don't know if I have a thryoid problem or not - yet. I had a scan last week that showed small nodules and a hypoechoic nodule. I am waiting for the lab results. My question is - I always have a nagging sore throat - does anyone else have that with their thyroid problems?

I have lupus so I always tend to blame all of my health problems on that but - even when they don't fit into the traditional lupus picture but as I read these boards, I see that many of you have these same problems. I can't wait to get my labs back to see if they show anything.

Thanks for your input about the sore throat thing.

Re: Does anyone have sore throat with their thyroid problems

Hi Cooking,

'Crimson crescents' can occure in a number of autoimmune diseases. Check your throat w/a mirror in good light (bright sunlight is best). If you see reddening at the edges of the pillars of the fauces [the 1st vertical structures at the back of the tongue, shaped like ( ' ) ] - that's crimson crescents. And it is often mildly sore. Can come & go.

Sinusitis & other upper respiratory tract infections are not uncommon in low thyroid. Infected postnasal drip from sinusitis can give you a sore throat, too.

Good that you're attending to the endocrine stuff as well as to the lupus. It's not uncommon to have both, but easy to get stuck treating from one disease viewpt or the other. Rheumy's have different hammers (meds) than Endo's, but they both think every symptom is a nail that needs to be hit with THEIR hammer.

Best wishes.

Re: Does anyone have sore throat with their thyroid problems

Well I do. I've had a problem with sore throats forever. Surgery for thyroid cancer and Hashi's 4 months ago and I'm telling you that my throat hasn't been the same since. Actually, it was awful before the surgery as well. But I do know that I haven't been well since since this entire thyroid thing happened. I have sore throat after sore throat after sore throat. I'm hoarse etc also. It's getting very boring and very irritating. I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago that I had strep and it took 2 rounds of antibiotics as well as Prednisone. And I've got another sore throat today and am hoarse. It's just all part of the thyroid stuff for me. And I don't enjoy it (I'm a complainer!!). I do not know anything about lupus, I'm sorry. I do now have an internist however and I'm checking for everything in a couple of weeks. You take care of that throat and let us know what you find out.
OH and if someone tells you to drink green tea...let me know also. Lord that's awful. I'm not a coffee or tea drinker but I tried the green tea. Eww. I might as well have pulled up some of our lawn and boiled it. How can people drink that? I just do not believe they think it's tasty.

Unhappy Re: Does anyone have sore throat with their thyroid problems

Hiya, I am new to these boards. Briefly I have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (last week) and just before Christmas I kept getting a sore throat; not severe but every day. I still have it now but as I have only just been prescribed medication I don't know if the sore throat will clear up. Also for ages I keep getting a tender thyroid. Do you have this? I am also bipolar and menopausal. The worst thing is the tiredness. It seems unbearable at times.

Re: Does anyone have sore throat with their thyroid problems

A have had a chronic sore throat and hoarseness since Dec. of 2003 (when I had my first flare-up of Hashi's...wasn't diagnosed for another year and a half). It has been my most persistant symptom.

Meds haven't helped my throat issues at this point but I'm only on 50mcg of levoxyl (it's been almost a year). Maybe someday I'll find a dr that cares enough to be helpful...until then I've lived with it this long so I'm sure I'll survive . It can get tiresome though!

Love and Prayers, Kelly
