anyone with gerd and thyroid troubles?

i'm wondering if anyone else has had problems differentiating between the similar throat sensations of gerd and hypo/hyper thyroid symptoms.

for examply, i've got gerd and hashi's. i'm still hypo with symptoms but getting better, but i think my gerd is back (i went off nexium in hopes i was 'cured") the trouble is, its sometimes hard to tell because i get uncomfortable throat sensations with either disorder. the typical lump-in-throat feeling is experienced with both. i'm going back on nexium just to be safe, but i hate taking medications unless i'm sure i need them of course.

anyone in the same boat?

Yes, I am in the same boat. I've definately had GERD symptoms, and my doc thinks my choking/trouble swallowing is related to that. He sent me for a Barium swallow test - haven't got the results yet. I think it's more related to my thryoid problems (Hashi's with multinodular goiter), but I guess it could be a little of both.

Re: anyone with gerd and thyroid troubles?

My husband had a huge nodule AND was told he had GERD. After finally being talked into getting his whole thyroid removed he never had GERD again.
He used to have a hard time eating steak without the reflux and vomiting afterwards and now he can eat anything without a problem.
I'm not saying this is definitely your problem but just wanted let you know there could be other causes for GERD

Re: anyone with gerd and thyroid troubles?

Same here. After my TT in Dec 2005 I had a barium swallow which showed GERD and a hiatal hernia. I'm taking Prilosec, but I don't think it helps because I'm still having the tight stretching sensation in my neck above the incision line, not sure what the actually difference is.
