Levothyroxine + selenium-take together?

When do you take selenium? With the T4 med or how long do you wait before taking it? Can you take it with calcium/vitamins?

Thanks,

Re: Levothyroxine + selenium-take together?

In my opinion, you could drive your self crazy, sorting through all the opinions on what will bind with what, and how.

To play it safe, I always take my thyroid meds by themselves, at least 4 hours after any thing other than water, and I wait one hour after meds for anything other than water.

I would especially not take supplements with my thyroid meds.

Beyond that.... you could get into the science of it. I don't know about Selenium, but I'm pretty sure Calcium will bind with the meds, and cause about a 50% drop in absorption.

Selenium has a long half-life, so there wouldn't be any benefit to taking it at any particular time of the day.

Re: Levothyroxine + selenium-take together?

Thanks Divermon, I wasn't sure - I wasn't going to take it with the T4, just in case. However, I have to take the calcium 3 times a day (500 each) so it makes it hard to take when I don't take calcium. I NEVER take the calcium until at least 4 hrs after the Levo. I have learned that from this board!! When you say calcium binds with the meds, do you mean the Levo or the selenium? I assume Levo - since selenium isn't a med. What does "bind with" mean exactly?

I finally went out and bought some today - got the 100's - went to 3 different stores - afraid of the 200's - it's 286% of mdr - don't want to od on anything.
I took one this afternoon -Levo at 5:30 am so I'm ok there.

THANKS AGAIN!!!! Your input is GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Levothyroxine + selenium-take together?

I was surprised to find the 200mcg selenium since it is such a high dose and an OD on it can be bad. I suspect the manufacturers must feel it is a safe dosage (in this litigious society) but, like you, I think the 100mcg doseage is adequate and safer. Due to the price I bought the 200 size and just break them in half. Even though they aren't scored I got lucky--they snap cleanly near the middle every time.

As for timing, I wait at least an hour after Synthroid to take anything--supplements or food. Black coffee is the only exception I make.

Re: Levothyroxine + selenium-take together?

Thanks Archie,
My hubby split some of the 100's in half for me last night. I took 100 yesterday, but only going to take 50 today. The only place I found the selenium in smaller doses was in the NARFE magazine mail order advertisement. I MAY do that, but I have to order no more than 2 of it and 4 of other things - only $ .89 each though - don't know about postage. I paid more for the 100's than splitting the 200's but I only wanted 50 to start. They didn't split as easily as yours - they are a little off sometimes.

How long does the selenium stay in your body working? Does it have a half life like T4 and T3? Or if you don't need it right now do you just eliminate it?
