Wink need a little help

Hi, iam 48 years of age female and have a history of miscarriages and from time to time mild depression,a friends father first notice that my thyroid was rather enlarged when i was 17 i never persued this nor did any drs in the uk suggest that i should be tested for any thyroid disorders,my health over the years has not been the best and just before christmas i become very fatigued and moody then ending up having a emergency d&c as i would not stop bleeding it was dicovered that i had a hormone imblance causing my periods to become prolonged and heavy and i am now taking Duphaspton this has improved my menstural cycle but i still continue to be so tired,moody my joints ache i have put one 1 stone in the past 2 months which i trying so hard to lose sticking to a heahtly diet and walking miles and as yet have not lost 1 pound have been having palpitations and feel cold.So after a little pressure from my family decided to see my GP here in Cyprus blood test were carried out today they are testing me for many things one of them being for thyroid problems i will get the results back on tuesday.Clearly will not know until then but would like to know more about the test carried out for thyriod and what the results should be if normal and what are they if abnormal i do have a very good doctor but his english is not brillant and my greek is limited so would be grateful for your knowledge.

No doubt the testing done included - or was limited to - TSH. The "normal" range for it may be quite broad, but in general, any level above 2.5 is suspect for low thyroid function. The average healthy person without thyroid disease has TSH of about .8 to 1.5; but a TSH of that level is still no guarantee of thyroid health if thyroid symptoms are present. Further testing needs to be done in those cases.

The best tests to do for thyroid consist of a panel of TSH, free T4, free T3, and the thyroid antibodies - TPO and Tg. It's a rare MD who does this panel in its entirety, but it really does give the most definitive picture.

Please let us know what your tests reveal, especially if you're told all is "normal". It certainly sounds as if your thyroid may be a problem for you.
