TSI/Graves testing

Is TSI the only true test for Graves? I was diagosed with hyperT due to Graves and haven't had a TSI test. Should I ask my dr. for one?

Thanks,
Sandy

Re: TSI/Graves testing

Hi Sandy-

TSI (antibody testing)is one test for graves along with other factors. RAIU (radioactive iodine uptake scan) is another along with symptoms and TSH, free T4 and T3 results. I found alot of endos say that the TSI is not very reliable but I insisted with my past endo to assure me that I have one done. Then it is up to the endo to put all the pieces together and decide on a graves diagnosis.

Re: TSI/Graves testing

Hi Sandy,
TSI antibodies are the antibodies that cause the hyperthyroidism due to Graves disease. If you have been taking ATD's to control your hyperthyroidism then the ATD's have most likely also lowered your antibody levels. (ATD's are a mild immunosuppressant and the only thing known to lower antibody levels other than surgical removal of the thyroid gland, that is why ATD's are capable of bringing about remission of the disease)

It would be a waste to test TSI if you've already been on ATD's for a couple of months....but I'm a big believer in testing TSI to see if a person is in remission BEFORE weaning off of ATD's.
