New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
I have been having Heart Palpitations now for 2 weeks. Have any of you had any of this before your thyroid was checked? My mother, 2 sisters are all on low Thyroid meds. I believe that is hypo?? Anyhow, I feel tired, low energy. Somewaht foggy thinking and EXTREMELY nervous all the time. Just before these Palps started I was have high anxiety problems for months. I had a blood test and my TSH is 3.97 It did not show any levels like T3 or 4 So I can't tell if or what may be off. My Dr. says all is o.k. with my thyroid. Now I'm finding out many blood tests are not showing a problem when there is really a problem. Next month I go see a Dr. who will do extensive blood testing to sort it all out.
Question Does Hypo,T, have symptoms of heart palps??
How do they treat HyperT, seems like I have symptoms with both Hypo and hyper???
Since my mother, and sisters are all on it, maybe I need it too.
Thanks so much for helping. I'm emotionally a mess right now.
Oh, I also want to add, I am underweight, I have a most difficult time gaining weight too. Can this also be a symptom??
Re: New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
Hi
Heart palps are one of the most predominant symptoms for thyroid problems - hypo or hyper. And yes, many symptoms overlap - weight gain; anxiety; palpitations; depression could be for any thyroid ailment.
I started taking a beta blocker - specifically Propranolol - because the palpitations were getting more frequent and more pronounced. I have been diagnosed hyperT and the heart racing can become an issue. I only had to take a small dose daily to get regulated, and I continue to take an even smaller dose for maintenance. Call your doctor and see if they'll order something for you even before you go to see the new doctor. Palpitations lead to anxiety which increase the palpitations - it's a vicious circle! But betas (which don't actually work on the heart, but on the nervous system) really did the trick for me.
If you are found to be hyper, they will most likely prescribe anti-thyroid drugs (methimazole which is the generic for tapazole or PTU if you are of child bearing age) and you can take it w/the beta until you start to feel better. If you are hypo, they will determine what you are lacking and start that medication - synthroid or levothyroxine are usual. It's good to know that whatever the problem, if it's thyroid it can be treated. It might take time to get the right med in the right dose, but you should start to feel better pretty quick. I really recommend the beta. I was hesitant at first, but I felt so much better so fast, I can't believe I waited!
Good luck.

Thank you all so much, I am going to get this look into further. I can't stand the way I feel. Just had a problem arise and boy I could hardley handle it. At times I feel like I'm really loosing it mentally. I just found a check list I can print out and boy on this list I checked off 24 marks. It is amazing how a little gland can do this to you! I have to admit, this health board place has really help me so much, you all are so extremely kind in answering my post. Right now, I'm in a crying jag, who know the next minute I'll be o.k. I can't thank you all enough for your help.
Re: New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
I'm hypo and when I need an increase in my dose I start getting palpitations... I am suddenly aware of my heart beat and then it kind of flutters and then goes back to normal, that happens on and off, usually in the evenings when I've dipped over into the hypo side again.
Re: New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
I have also had heart palps while hypo and hyper. There are some things that you should have your doc check when going to have more tests. They should be the free T4 and Free T3 as well as the TSH and antibodies as well. These tests will tell them what is wrong if any with the thyroid. It looks as if your TSH would be high since there is suppost to be a new lab standard for TSH ranges of .3 to 3.0. Some labs still are not using these ranges and if your is then you would have a high TSH. The Beta blocker is a good idea and I think that advice makes alot of since, either hypo or hyper you can take a beta blocker, and I know they did help me when I was hyper. My sister in law had symtoms of hypoT but turned out to be hyperT. The doctor was suprised by this. People with a family history of thyroid issues are at higher rish of having thyroid issues as well, even if it is not the same as what the other family members suffer from. My family mainly suffers from hypoT but I had Graves(hyperT). You might also want to have your childs thyroid checked some platelet issues arise from thyroid.

Have any of you had a spike in blood pressure or anxiety attack with your heart paps while you hypo. My TSH stay very low but my ft3 and ft4 are also near the bottom. I do have hashi's. Dr. won't raise meds because of TSH. How can I be hyper with low hormone levels?

I have continued to suffer from anxiety attacks even after becoming hypoT, but haven't had any problems with spiked blood pressure. I do hear that even with normal levels of TSH and the Frees that if the antibodies are very high that would mean that the meds might need to be changed. They say that if you have high antibodies and nothing else showing then the antibodies give the doc the knowleadge to monitor your levels and meds.
Re: New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
I suffered from palps for a year on and off. Had a nuclear imaging study test of the heart ( ok ) and a heart monitor that actually confirmed the palps but doctors kept saying no thyroid problem. They gave me propanol (a beta blocker) which definately helps and Xanax - because they thought it was all in my head - HA!
TSH level was 3.57 about a year ago. Just recently an endo confirmed I was hypo and put me on Levoxyl.
Hang in there because the palps can cause you to stress out which could lead to panic attacks. Like the previous posters - it can all get into a vicious cycle. I purchased a breathing CD by Dr Weil and this helps tremendously. After being on the Thyroid meds, I don't notice the palps as much nor do I need the Propanol. (I keep it around just in case).

Dr knows how stubborn I am (I will not even take anything for a headache)
so i get there and she said no need to see a heart doctor i just put that in your messages to get you in here..
she gave me 30mg of
Armour (thyroid) 1 time per day
my levels were
tsh 13.10
t3 she said no one looks at that anymore
t4 1.4
Re: New to this thread....Need advise !Heart Palps and Thyroid
Hey, Dave, she put you on Armour which is a good thing - it can be really hard to find a doc who will even prescirbe it - so i wouldn't dump her just yet. Most docs don't measure T3 - but you will be getting it in the Armour, so that's good.

I am on advair and it worked for two weeks; now I am back to the palps and brathing problems. I can't even go from sitting to standing without my heart pounding so fast that I feel I am going to have a heart attack. i have had the heart checked for blockage...none. my breathing function tests are "ok" (told I have some small problems but nothing big...yet am on advair and rescue inhaler)...what do do? do you all get scared with the palps? are yours happening all the time? upon exertion?

I do not know if that is normal for you:
but i go 2 to 3 weeks with them every few minutes,
then I'll go 1 week with the heartbeat totally fine
(still STRONG) but no palps,
ask the doc what they are actually seeing?
ask to be Put on a heart monitor (more then once)
I have worn the heart monitor on and off since i was 19 when i first had the palps...
Now @ 38 they finally picked up what they said had to do with the heart sinus..
which is something to do with the thyroid and the electrical functions of the heart..
they also found that my heart RESET itself which put them at ease for any blockages..
what do do?
I try to be still and relax
which is hard for me and usually I end up in the ER with a major panic attack
do you all get scared with the palps?
yes see above
are yours happening all the time?
mine can be frequent for 2 or 3 weeks then i do not get them for a few weeks sometimes for 6 months
but they always return
upon exertion?
today i ran the weed eater in the yard ( my days off yard work days joy joy)
came in the house heart palped about 25 times
and my heart was slamming
since they say.... there is nothig wrong i fugure o well
live with it and deal with it
not that i want to but no other choice.
