Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

My friend says that the voice horsness and lump in throat feeling and pain in neck would stay the same always and get worse not change in intensity from day to day. I have had this perticular problem for months never relating it to my thyroid before now. I am not on meds yet. Doctor is going to do some more tests before we start meds. T4 was below normal. She can not feel a lump, but when my voice is really horse and my neck hurts I can see the swelling in my neck. It does change in intensity but my friend says if the thyroid were enlarged the doctor would feel it and they would also feel nodules and goiters and if they don't then my neck and throat problems are not from my thyroid.
This is all new to me and I have already asked alot of questions which I have appreciated your help with. If you could help me again I would be grateful. Truthfully I did not expect this and am a bit scared.

Thanks so much

Aneattra

My friend has hypo and is on meds. She has nodules so that is why I listen to her. But I have a strong feeling that this is related to my thyroid.

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Oh my gosh! the earachy feeling I have that too! All this time because of my fibromyalgia I never said anything to my doctor. I guess it really is kind of a good thing my hair is falling out because tests probably wouldn't have been ordered and I would just keep right on suffering thinking it is the fms and allergies, which by the way I have never had before. The some of the discriptions of symptoms that you all say are exactly how I would describe mine. WOW! I go in this Tuesday for more testing I am not sure which tests first, I trust my doctor so I think we will figure out the exact problem I just don't know how long it will take.

I really appreciate all of you and if we have to deal with this stuff it's good to have others to help. Thanks again

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Hi Aneattra!

I have a nodule that is a little over 1 cm. I didn't even know I had it until the endo did a simple swallow test and then did an ultrasound on my thyroid. Before I knew this I did notice that my voice was hoarse sometimes, I have a difficult time swallowing food, and etc, and coughed. I have noticed that some days my nodule does increase in size and then goes down. This is what I have noticed.

Thanks,

Cindy

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Hi Cindy,
My gp did the swallow test and said she didn't feel anything. Now that my blood test show a problem we are going to do more tests. She has actually referred me to a specialists and I am not sure what tests he will do. I can see the swelling in my neck and at times it is more noticable then others. I have had the horse voice and trouble swallowing and pain and coughing for months and months and months. I just never thought to say anything because I feel that with the fms I complain all the time. And honestly after 11years with the fms I just attribute everything to it. Now I realize I shouldn't be doing that. By the way I am 39 and was diagnosed with fms at 28. I have not had any thyroid tests done since back then and I am sure it was just the tsh. Who knows how long my thyroid has really been a problem.
Can there still be a nodule on my thyroid if my doctor couldn't feel one? And can the thyroid just be enlarged or swollen without nodules or goiters?

Thanks
Aneattra

Seems like answers to my other questions just makes me bring up more questions -thanks for being patient.

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Oh, Aneattra,

Join the fibro-thyroid club! You know there are some specialists who believe that the primary cause of fibro is hormonal malfunction, thyroid being the chief offender!

Before I began T meds, I had lost about 15 pounds due to a combination of trouble swallowing (choking), painful TMJ, and just general "hurts-too-much-to -get-to-the-kitchen & prepare food (fibro issues).

Swallowing & hoarseness for me was variable from day-to-day. Some days I would choke on liquids. I had pretty much given up singing.

I am happy to report that, even though my T meds are not totally optimized, I've improved a LOT. I have almost no swallowing issues at present. My fibro is still variable, but better than it was.

I have not yet had an ultrasound of my thyroid, but would like to get one done. Office palps done by GPs are successful only w/the most glaringly obvious goiters. I have read many posts by folks who were found to have goiter or nodules not previously known to exist. In fact, if you look at the stats, thyroid nodules are pretty common.

You can get temporary thyroid swelling from a virus. Not sure if that's considered a goiter or not. I think it's usually called "viral thyroiditis."

Let us know what tests are done & what you find out! Good luck.

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

My doctor is really good but she is not an expert on thyroid and she admits it. She is sending me to an ears, nose, and throat doctor. Is this the kind of doctor I should see? She told me he is one of the top thyroid specialists in the state. She is certain that I have a problem but she would rather find the exact problem before treatment so she is sending me to this other doctor. I couldn't believe I can get in so fast. I go this coming Tuesday and I will definitly report back.

Thanks everyone
Aneattra

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Hi aneattra!

My endo said after I did the swallow test that he saw something and then he felt my neck and said the right side is inflammed, and he could tell the right side looked worse than the left side. The he dragged in the ultrasound machine and he said nothing on the left side but the right side had a colloid nodule and looked calcified. All of my test are in the normal range, which is why I don't understand having the nodule. One of my primary care doctors said I may have thyroidiitis. A co-worker has fibro. Please let us know how you doctors appointment went. I will let you know about the fna and the results.

Hi elmhar!

I hope you get that ultrasound just so you can make sure you do not have a nodule, or a goiter. I have a hard time swallowing food and liquids. I have a choking cough and my voice comes and goes and is hoarse sometimes. It is awful when one is trying to talk at work and home.

Thanks,

Cindy

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

Anneatra,

Great that you could get in to see the ENT so quickly! With the swallowing & hoarseness issues, it is totally appropriate to be evaled by an ENT. Not all of them are thyroid experts (tho' some are, and I trust your referring doc is correct), but at the very least, he should be able to rule out "other causes" for the swallowing & choking problems.

You'll have to take it one step at a time w/the new ENT doc. Generally getting more info is preferrable, and sometimes it's hard to get a referral, so you really lucked out.

Let us know the outcome, please!

Re: Can horsness and full feeling in neck and throat change from day to day??

I can only speak after the TT. I have fullness, tightness, feels like something is always in my throat. To day was a good example. My neck and throat area was so tight and full, I thought my breathing was affected. I guess it just various from person to person.

Prior to the TT I only had some clearing of the throat and not a fullness in the neck, since I had that large substernal thyroid.
