Thyroid ultrasound and other stuff

I need some help with a few things Ive been wondering about...I started Armour on June 7th...felt wonderful for about 6 weeks...last week I started having a few headaches here and there, and started having swelling and pain in my arms and hands, and my lump in my throat came back, its been bothering me longer, it came back about 3 weeks ago. I figured it was time for a dose increase, im on 1 grain, so I called my Endo and told his nurse what was going on, she called me back and said he wanted to schedule me for a thyroid ultrasound ASAP. ( my next appt. with him wasn't till Sept.7th) Could this be something to worry about since the lump keeps coming back? My last TSH test was .07 on 50 mcg of Levoxyl before I was changed to Armour. (they're lab ranges are .3 to 5.5) I figured with my TSH being so low that a normal goiter would shrink....it did for a while but it now feels like I'm swallowing by a sharp rock, thats the only way I could describe it. Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesnt. I know the ultrasound is used to look for cysts, nodules and tumors...would a goiter still hang around with a low TSH or would it more than likely be a nodule or cyst or something? Some things I've read on the internet about it has got me worried. I just need some good advice from you guys....Thanks

Re: Thyroid ultrasound and other stuff

My goitre did not shrink much with either levothyroxine or Armour my last TSH was 0.4 so its supressed. I can feel it contracting when I am in direct sunlight for some reason and occaisionally it hurts like hell for no obvious reason.
I have hashis but no nodules and think its the antibodies flaring when my goitre gets uncomfortable.

try not to worry too much about cancer and stuff, even if it is the worst case scenario then thyroid cancer is the most treatable and curable cancer there is.
keep posting, we are here for you.
best wishes

Re: Thyroid ultrasound and other stuff

I'm glad the endo is sending you for an u/s. That will give you some answers, or see if you need to dig further. I ended up having a nuclear scan after the results of u/s were "HOT" nodules. (heard of cat scans at this point to) Then the endo did a needle biopsy just to make sure growth was non-cancerous. It was then put on a watch statis until it doubled in size. Then my endo wanted enlarged lobe removed. So that's what happened 10/05
Honestly, I don't know the difference between goiter & nodule. But that some CAN BE reduced with medication. Often an enlarged Thyroid is one that is mal-functioning.

hang in there Keep us posted,
Sue
