I saw my doctor about having an unusually high heart rate. I recently joined a gym and found my heart rate to be in the 140-190 range during a light-moderate aerobic exercise... resting heart rate is often above 100. She sent me for a treadmill ECG and blood tests to check for hyperthyroidism. While waiting to receive the results, I've been reading up on the symptoms and find that I have quite a few of them --fatigue, depression, gradual hair loss, nail problems. It would really explain a lot, especially as I have been struggling with depression over the years. Is it very common for people with this disorder to experience major depression and will it be alleviated after treatment?
Hi, Yes it is common to become depressed with hyperthyroidism .
I was quite depressed with Graves hyperthyroid and from being hypo from radioactive iodine treatment for Graves disease. Please don't let them give you RAI, it has bad side effects. Propylthouracil, Tapazole are two of the antithyroid drugs to treat hyperthyroidism. They might put you on a beta blocker to slow your heartrate down. With your resting heartrate that high, maybe they could prescribe you a beta blocker if you ask. It really does help.
You are entitled to get a copy of your bloodtests.
** RAI ablation for Graves disease 2004**
Dito..on no rai,,I have read way too much(good thing or bad?)..about that. I take Methemizole..and before it kicked in I was on a beta blocker to slow the heart down. Read all you can on this..some of it is scary, some enlightening. Did you know that in America the first and most popular treatment is RAI..foreign Dr try meds, and if I had not done this rewading, all 3 Dr i have gone to wanted to just do Rai..easier for them..I get blood work done every 3-4 weeks, and am now down to 2 1/2 mg a day..a very good dosage. I get copies of all results, and keep a diary. Also found out thta certain foods affect hyper..lettuce is one, so at test time, i back off!
there is a great book called "Living Well With Hyperthyroidism" by Mary ******(the board won't let me print last name, but any large book store, or on line has it..VERY GOOD BOOK
