Have decided to do RAI. Will have to stop Tapazole 21 days prior. Would appreciate any details people might have on their experience with this procedure ie...did you remain hyperthyroid for long? Did you resume Tapazole? Will Beta Blockers suffice until turning hypothyroid etc.

p.s. Don't want horror stories, thankyou...there is enough of that going on every day.]

Hi...I had RAI for Graves and didn't have any problems. I think the hardest part was rememebering to flush twice for the next few days. I stayed on atenenol for a few months and then stopped. It took my thyroid about 2 1/2months to fail. When i started noticing hypo signs i called the dr., had labs run and got on meds. I started feeling better a few days after starting synthroid and have felt good ever since..Rai Oct. 2003...started meds late Dec 2003. I've never taken tapazole so i can't help you there...add that to your list of questions to ask.

The way they did it where i went was...go in early morning, take the iodine markers (can't remember what they were called)...went away for 6 hours, came back for the uptake and scan test...wait some more while they read the test and finally took the RAI pills. We were there all day. If there is anything i can help you with just ask. take care...phyllis

Hi there. Thank you for responding to my post. I'm new to this so am having difficulty figuring out how to find the answer to my posts (or even find my posts for that matter haha).

I saw my Internist on Tuesday so am waiting now for the Nuclear Medicine Dept. at the hospital to call with a date (has to be atleast 3 weeks from now because of the Tapazole cessation). He just mentioned going to the hospital, taking the pill and leaving. Said the NM Dept. would give me info regarding contamination etc. He said I could be up and down for as long as 2 years as my thyroid slowly dies; or, it could be 3 months and that'll be it. I hope it's like you because I'm already feeling up and down like a yoyo and it's only been 4 months (seems like 2 years!).

I'm glad you're doing fine. I imagine I'll be back on the Inderal to manage the symptoms once I quit the Tapazole. Am back to having insomnia the past couple of nights so not sure what that's all about 'cause my last tests showed I was now in the "normal" range (I'd say borderline hypo). sheesh. who knows.
