Question Uh oh -- experiencing first side effects from Synthroid

I've been doing so great since my TT, but yesterday and today I've noticed my heartbeat feels a little irregular and slightly increased. Also, last night I only slept three houre due to insomnia...which is rare for me. My legs kept jumping and felt crampy and I just wasn't sleepy. I've been dead tired today.

Did anyone else experience irregular/increased heartbeat with synthroid when you first started taking and do I need to contact my doctor to report this? The dosage is 100 mcg.

As always, thanks in advance for your experience and insights!

Hi Intrigue,

I would call the doc's office & ask for lab test for calcium level. Cramping is more related to calcium/magnesium/potassium balance IME.

Best wishes.

I'm so sorry you are having this problem - but it is more easily solved than the problems you were having before surgery, eh?

I have to agree with elmhar - the jumping and cramping sound more like Ca imbalance.

On the other hand, I have heard that 50mcg is the starting dose of Synthroid - so it may just be, too, that your dose is too high, too soon. Were you on thyroid meds before your surgery? If not, then it might be too much to start with. It's always better to start with a low dose and work up slowly.

Will you be getting labs done soon? It would help to know your Ca, Mg, and Free T3 and T4 levels.

Love and Prayers,

Re: Uh oh -- experiencing first side effects from Synthroid

I'll definitely call the ENT. I'm really much more concerned about the rapid heartrate than the leg cramps and it makes sense that the dosage might be too high, as you said, Ore. I wasn't on any thyroid meds before surgery and not due to see him again for another three weeks, so a phone call is definitely warranted. Thanks much, all!
