If a person is negative for antibodies, why would their TSH be elevated? What other reasons are there for the thyroid not producing the needed hormones. My daughter's TSH is 5.24 but I just recieved her antibodies result and it was < 10..... Also, no nodules or anything like that.

Well, that's wonderful news that her thyroid antibodies (which ones - TPO, or anti-thyroglobulin?) are negative. You said she was on thyroid hormone, even to the point of suppression, and then taken off - how was she weaned off? Was her dosage gradually reduced incrementally over a period of several months? It takes time for the thyroid to "bounce" back after one suppresses it with thyroid hormone. It could be that her thyroid is still not recovered. That's one reason.

There are other reasons why thyroids do not function optimally - has she been checked for pituitary problems?

The lab sheet says anit microsomal- not sure which one that is. She has been off of meds now for around 8 months. We first started by cutting the dosage down by 1/4th for a week and then 1/2 for a week; she couldn't tell any difference so we just quit althogher at that point. Her labs have been checked twice since then- the first time about 3-4 months later and the tsh was 3.8 and now a week ago and it was 5.24. She is really having a lot of symptoms now so that is why I urged her new doc to do the tests. No, she hasn't ever had her pit. checked. What would they check for, and what test should I ask for? The only other test ordered at this time is the 24 hour urine cortisol test; we are going to try to do this one day next week. Thanks for your input- any suggestions are welcome!!
