Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

About a year before I was diagnosed hypothyriod I noticed my tongue seemed somewhat swollen.

As time progressed I began having teeth indentations on the side of tongue because of it. I learned after I was diagnosed that this is a symptom that some but not all experience due to thyroid problem.

I've been on synthroid for 5 1/2 months and swelling is slowly but surely going away and no teeth indentations anymore.

Just curious if anyone else experienced or has this unpleasant crazy symptom?

Never thought of it as a thyroid symptom but yeah, come to think of it, I get teeth impressions around the tongue. The one thing that I have noticed and blamed on the hormones is that the only time I get bleeding gums when I brush my teeth is when my thyroid's acting up.

Re: Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

Oh yes, for years I felt like my tongue was too big for my mouth. I didn't think it was swollen, figured I was just built wrong, especially since I was diagnosed as having a tongue thrust problem as a child which led to three years of braces to fix my teeth. But as more and more symptoms of hypo appeared, and the swelling got worse until I was having painful tooth indentations on both sides of my tongue, it dawned on me that maybe it was a symptom.

Since starting on medication back in July, the swelling has improved a little and I have even experienced some days where it doesn't feel swollen at all. Today isn't one of those days, but at least it isn't as bad as it used to be before starting the medication.

Thanks for starting this thread. Its nice to know I'm not the only one who has experienced this strange symptom.

I am not diagnosed yet, but I am in the outter ranges of normal with symptoms of hypo. My tongue has been swollen for ages now. I have the teethmarks on both sides as well.

Re: Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

When I was first diagnosed hypothyroid I didn't mention the swollen tongue to the doc. I was really out of it by then and not making the connection.

Wasn't until several days later when I was on medication and beginning to feel somewhat better that I got online to research this curious little organ. I found on several sites a list of symptoms and swollen tongue with teeth indentations on side was one of them.

My mother said her's was swollen 30 years ago when she was diagnosed but she didn't recall having the teeth indentations. I'm sure that varies from person to person and how swollen their tongue becomes.

It cause you to drool out the sides of your mouth. THAT about drove me crazy until swelling went down. Had to have a kleenex with me constantly. Felt like a nut and it was embarrassing. lol

Re: Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

I've got this problem too. I am waiting to get back to the dr (on 14th May) and I know from my blood tests - and the way I'm feeling! - that my levels are all out of whack again. I was just fine on 100mcg a day but clearly that isn't helping anymore. I've got very sore joints and muscles, especially on getting up, my tongue has really evident indentations, I have swallowing issues, my throat feels very tight and I'm exhausted all the time.

Re: Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

this is so strange before diagnoses i chewed on my tongue so i say yes it is a thyroid symptom i used to chew on my tongue each time i was pregnant and i felt like eating powder things/???? so i think when i was pregnat it made me hyperthyroid as all my arms and legs started to waste away and i just had a little bump plus i was very thin after having all 3 kids but yes interesting and a good gauge do you think you are hypo or hyper thyroid?? love from katxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x xxx

Re: Anyone have or had swollen tongue as a symptom??

I know I'm hypo. the sad thing is that about 2 years ago I was just fine with my meds... now it all seems back to the drawing board.
sigh.
