Anxiety post right Thyroidectomy

I am currently 2 weeks post op right thyroidectomy. Emotionally I dont feel like myself at all....ive been having a lot of anxiety. I have problems falling asleep at night and staying asleep. Last night i woke up in the middle of the night only a couple hrs after falling asleep drenched in a cold sweat, it was horrible and i wasn't having a bad dream or anything that i can remember. the anxiety is really getting to me bad. especially not being able to sleep right at night. can this be from only having half my thyroid now? or am i just going crazy someone please help

Kate

Re: Anxiety post right Thyroidectomy

Hi Kate

My understanding is that during a thyroidectomy (partial or total) a "bunch" of excess thyroid hormone may be released into your bloodstream, which can cause anxiety, jumpiness, etc. weeks after surgery. Before my surgery a friend warned me that I would probably want to "jump out of my skin" for a short time after....she was absolutely right!

I'm sure you'll be fine in a few more weeks, if that's the cause. Are you on any thyroid meds now? Could be adding to the situation....

hope you feel better soon -

Re: Anxiety post right Thyroidectomy

Hi Katie

No you're no going mad! :-). Like the previous poster says you apparently get a 'thyroid dump' after removal and it can take a while to clear. Its horrible I know - it happened to me and I was convinced that I'd made a huge mistake by getting it removed and that I would be like it FOREVER! Thankfully thats not the case and it does pass. Just be patient and try not to be scared by it as that only makes it worse. Just consider it part of the healing process.

Take care and good luck with your recovery.
