Does underactive thyroid make feel like lump in throat
I was tested for thyroid function bc I was complaining of feeling of lump in throat and doc called me back to say thyroid said underactive. Can this be cause of this feeling?
Re: Does underactive thyroid make feel like lump in throat
Absolutely.
Before starting treatment I had various feelings in my throat - at first it was just a sensation, but not painful like a sore throat from a cold. It was just a sensation that something was there, it felt different and I was aware of it. Since I suffer from allergies and chronic sinus problems, I figured that was the cause. This went on for years before it turned into more of a lump feeling.
Over time, as I got more hypo, it changed and turned into more of a fullness and tight feeling and I would sometimes have a little difficulty swallowing. This also went on for a few years before turning into a lump feeling, and I was still blaming it on allergies.
By the time I found a doctor who took me seriously and started treating me, I felt like there was a lump in my throat - it felt like it was on the inside of my throat, or like something was pushing against it, but I have no visible lump or swelling on my neck.
The feeling almost went all away when I first started treatment. I still had days where I had just a sensation, but it wasn't as bad as feeling like there was a lump in there. After the doctor upped my dose it did go away entirely for a short time. Now it is back, the lump feeling, as well as some other symptoms, so I need another increase.
Re: Does underactive thyroid make feel like lump in throat
That was one of my main complaints when i went to the dr. I had a lump in my throat kind of feeling and it was driving me nuts. I was not diagnosed being hypo thyroid as of yet and my dr. kept telling me that it could be from stress. It did get better since i am on medication, but once in a while i will still feel it and i sometimes have a tight feeling and feel kind of phlemy and i think it is from my thyroid being enlarged.

I have this feeling as well, though it has improved since being on Levothyroxine. I have had an ultrasound and no nodules either - just goiter. Hope it improves for you,
Angela

Is your doctor starting you on medication?
No, I can't seem to get anything out of him. He wants me to have more than blood tests but I cannot afford them. I already am hypo. What meds are you on?

Reason: not enough explanation
