Need feedback on test results. I'm headed to a specialist Tuesday and I'm VERY new at all this. Results state: Left lobe measures 4.9x1.2x1.9cm. There is a .7x.4x5cm nodule within the midportion of the left lobe. There is a subcentimeter left-sided lymph node also. Impression: Heterogeneous Thyroid.
Anybody want to take a stab at what all this means? Thank you in advance.
It also means that it's not homogeneous which would mean it is uniform. ****= 1, hetero= more than one. Gotta dig these latin phrases. Docs seem to always speak a foreign language. Perhaps to keep us in the dark? BTW, if it appeared dark, they'd call it "obscurus". A good latin dictionary helps when you're trying to understand this stuff.
I'm more concerned with the solitary nodule on the left side. Is that .7X.4X.5cm or is it .7X.4X 5 cm????
It's a small one if it's totally under 1cm, you might just want to keep an eye on it once a year. If it does grow over 1 cm you'd want to get an FNA to check the cells, right now it's on the borderline of being tested further.
Nodules are really common, but since you know you have one now, you should keep an eye on it.
Thank you all for your responses. It has helped a lot. Yes. It's under 1 centimeter. I go Tuesday so I'm anxious to see what latin words I'll hear then. Just a little scary when my Mom had hyper and had major surgery around my age. That's why my Doctor checks me every year, but for some reason, she decided to do the ultrasound since my tests keep coming back normal. Thanks again.
