swelling and redness around eyes

About ever 3 years I wake up with my eyelids as well as the undereyes swollen to the point that I can only see out of slits. Sad but I can not find a reason. This will last about a week and then disappear. It seems to be the sinus cavity under the eyes as well as above and yet there were no prior symtoms of sinusidus.I apply hot and cold compresses as well take lots of vitamines high in antioxidents. But no one can tell me what causes it. Oh Yes no headaches no runny nose but I do get watery eyes. Ohand the skin around the eyes where the swelling is becomes rough and flacky. On it I use olive oil to keep it moist till it clears up. What can I do to prevent this. I am diebetic Type 2. Have not had my thyroid checked.

Re: swelling and redness around eyes

Your symptoms can be caused by too many things to try to nail it down here on the board.

I'm hypothryoid. Since being diagnosed and put on medication I notice that occasionally one or both of my upper eyelids get red and slightly puffy just above the lash line. I think it is because now that I have this condition that I'm sensitive to cosmetics or possibly medication that I wasn't before. Like you I just use cold cloth compress to relieve it. It goes away.

If it only happens every 3 years and goes away quickly I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably just your system a little off balance at that time. If it hangs on what seems like too long definetly go to an allergist.

Good luck

Re: swelling and redness around eyes

You need to go to an allergist/immunologist.. get your thyroid checked as well as allergy testing done. SO many things can cause this symptom it isn't funny.

Thyroid tests you need run.. TSH, FT3, FT4, TPOAB, and TSI. You get these run and you will know if it is your thyroid or something else.

Sincerely,
MG
