Armour & Low TSH

Hello everyone --
I started taking Armour in January after two years on Synthroid following my TT. Here are my first labs after 7 weeks on Armour:

TSH .048 (range .5-6)
Free T4 .83 (range .75-1.54)

I take 90 mg of Armour each morning along with 5 mcg of Cytomel. (I had previously been taking the Cytomel with Synthroid.)
I'm not feeling hypo for the first time in years. I experienced a little heart racing in the beginning but don't notice anything now. I've lost 12 lbs recently, thank goodness, but started Armour and Weight Watchers at the same time!

I feel good...but is TSH too low for my own good? Your thoughts?

Re: Armour & Low TSH

TSH means squat on Armour. Armour is T3 and T4 supplementation. You have to follow the FT3 and Ft4 levels.. ignore the TSH. Get an FT3 done. By the Ft4 you need a medication boost. If your Ft3 is high you may have to investigate and treat an accompanying case of adrenal insufficiency or low cortisol production to balance your FTs.

I am glad you are feeling better, but the MD can not ignore the FT3 levels whil on a T3 replacement supplement. TSH is suppressed by the T3 and thus will always be low. Ignore it. TSH on optimally medicated Armour patients can go to neigh zero.

Re: Armour & Low TSH

I take Armour. My own TSH has been .01-.02 for over 4 years, with my MD's sanction and approval. What MG says is true. If TSH isn't suppressed by Armour, the dose usually isn't high enough to do you any good.
And I strongly agree with her that your FT3 needs to be watched if you take a T3 preparation.

Re: Armour & Low TSH

Thank you for your responses and advice. Even though it's been two years since my TT, I'm still learning as I go along and all these hormones and their proper levels can be confusing. I'm curious as to why my doc didn't have the FT3 checked also. I will inquire. I'm just thrilled I'm feeling good for a change!
