MKGand others-Constriction /Shrinkage of Thyroid due to Hashi's

Over one yr. while on synthroid for hashi 's my thyroid on one lobe decreased a little over 50% , other lobe decreased by a smaller amount but still over 20%. Before my thyroid was classified as normal size, now on u/s they say small size.
I read that the antibodies destruction causes both nodules and scar tissue and that scar tissue will contract over time. And that this can lead to breathing /swallowing issues.
I don't want to necessarily wait for big breathing or swallowing issue to occur but as I have 7 nodules (2-8mm)and now a reactive lymph node doesn't it seem like it is time to ask my endo about possibly having the thyroid out.Would you say the factors are mounting? Also my neck is quite sore and lymph gland is tender.

You hae a 8 cm nodule? That is quite large.

Re: MKGand others-Constriction /Shrinkage of Thyroid due to Hashi's

MKG-I wanted to see if you had any thoughts about the rapid and significant constriction of a thyroid? I am going to bring this up with the endo when I see her. Also I have recently had neck swelling and tenderness. Not really at the thyroid but at the lymph gland in my neck. This is where they found the 3 cm mass about 3 wks ago-though the mass "resolved " within 5 days. I have been told to use ibuprofen 3x a day. I guess antibiotics are not used against the antibodies-I am thinking it is the antibodies that are causing this.
I think you have said that you have neck tenderness/swelling as well , did they script something for you?

You probably aren't talking to me since I don't know what caused my reactive lymph node. But it was 1.3 x 1 x .5 cm. Best I can tell it is still there. And I have this fullness and slight pain into that ear. They didn't tell me to do anything for it. Almost feels like salivary gland involved.

Curious-I was tallking to MKG-but so glad you answered as well. So, with your reactive lymph node they didn't say to do anything and you still feel it. I too think there has been salivary gland involvement because I had a swollen parotid about 2 months ago . I think the lymph gland is going to swell up and down as the inflammatory process waxes and wanes. At least that seems to be what is happening to me. When I was talking about shrinkage/constriction though I was talking about the actual thryoid itself. I wondered if MKG had read about thyroid constriction.

Maybe it won't settle down again and just stay irritated or it will fluctuate. When I was talking about constriction though I was talking about the actual thryoid itself.
I know. I was responding to the part about your lymph node.

Re: MKGand others-Constriction /Shrinkage of Thyroid due to Hashi's

One of the reasons I am concerned about the shrinkage is that I understand that the parathyroid glands could become embedded in the thyroid AND if I had a thyroidectomy this could be more of a problem causing potential hypoparathyroid. It seems I should get out the thyroid before it constricts more. But, this is just based on what I have read. I haven' talked to an ent or endo about this yet. Soon.
