Hypo and enlarged heart

I just had my yearly mammagram and chest ex-rays and my report said "enlarged heart". This did not show up last yr. I was wondering if being hypo and not taking enough meds could cause this?

Yes it sure can.. Umm look up complications from an underactive or undertreated thyroid.. Enlarge heart should pop up there..

or do a search enlarge heart and hypothyroidism..

Re: Hypo and enlarged heart

Thanks Lucky Charms......I looked it up and you are right. I thought I had read that somewhere. I wonder if taking more meds would correct it. I'm almost afraid to tell my thyroid dr. He will probably be afraid to increase meds if he thinks I have a heart problem.

Re: Hypo and enlarged heart

Heart enlargement occurs because you are having to push more blood thorough to meet oxygenation needs. When you are hypoT your heart reat and BP drop. The lower the more blood volume needs to increase to meet your needs. Thus bigger heart more blood per beat.

What are your levels now Shmily? Your MD shouldn't think you are blaming him/her. It is just a side effect you have and want to treat. I do not know if you can shrink your heart with thyroid meds. The best you may be able to hope for is a ceasation of heart growth. Is your heart just large.. no defects? Flow anomolies like shortened valves can cause these issues as well. My heart is a bit large, and strong. When it gives me palpatations I know it. Hashimoto's makes my issues worse.

Re: Hypo and enlarged heart

When I saw my thyroid specialist a yr. ago I was taking 3/4 gr. Armour +12 1/2 mcg Levoxyl. My labs were:

TSH..............1.2.................... ..Range .3 - 4
FT4...............1.34.................. ..Range .73 - 1.95
Ft3................2.8.................. ...Range 2.3 - 4.2
And he wouldn't increase, said my results were "perfect". Told me to come back in 6 mo. He canceled my appointment because he had to be out of office [he is 2 1/2 hrs away] so I just went to my gp. I thought I needed more T3.

My gp gave me a prescription for 1 1/2 gr. Armour, to discontinue the Levoxyl and told me to gradually work up to that but to get Labs as I increased. By November I was taking 1 1/4 grains Armour and my labs were:

TSH...................0.881............. ................Range .3 -4
Ft4...................0.8............... ..................Range 0.6 - 1.2
Ft3...................2.73..L........... ..................Range 2.77 - 5.27

I gradually increased up to 1 1/2 gr. and had labs done 2 wks ago and they were:

TSH........................0.10......... ..................40 -4.20
Ft4.........................0.9......... ....................0.6 - 1.2
Ft3.........................3.01........ ...................2.77 - 5.27

Gp said I was overmedicated, but I think I need more T3. She said to take my labs when I see my thyroid dr. Wed. When my labs were like this before he decreased me to almost half. My pituitary gland has been checked twice, normal. I had a blood test and then a Thyrel injected blood test. I have TSI antibodies [87 % when tested yr. ago] I was told at the time that the TSI antibodies was falsely suppressing TSH.

I have felt better on the higher dose of Armour but am feeling like I need another increase. Muscles not as sore and I am walking better, not as short of breath, but am very sleepy all the time and can't stay up late at nightly. very dry skin, and numb fingertips. My bp is a lot better, very seldom have heart paps, resting heart rate in the 60's, and not hyper at all. A decrease would do me in.

Re: Hypo and enlarged heart

TSH........................0.10......... ..................40 -4.20 - Being on Armour this is pretty much meaningless.
Ft4.........................0.9......... ....................0.6 - 1.2 - [0.9 - 0.6]/[1.2 - 0.6]*100 = 50% You have just reached the bottom of optimal range. You have PLENTY of room for more T4 here.
Ft3.........................3.01........ ...................2.77 - 5.27 - [3.01-2.77]/[5.27-2.77]*100 = 9.6% Way too low. You need more T3 for sure! Have you tried cytomel? You may need more T3 than you can get in Armour alone.
