Does FNA spread cancer cells

I have fna tomorrow and remember a discussion on here a few days ago about whether or not this spreads cancer cells if nodule happens to be cancerous. What was the final opinion on this or has anybody asked their doctor?

Re: Does FNA spread cancer cells

My ENT doesn't believe cancer cells spread as a result of an FNA. The needle aspiration creates zones of vacuum suction taken matter out an leaving the space to be filled with blood. If the thyroid was cancerous the cells would be noted and mass removed before any spreading naturally could occur. I asked him about this.. in January. FNAs are quite safe.

Re: Does FNA spread cancer cells

Ditto, I had my biopsy on the 8th and I asked the same question. My endo assured me this has been studied and all ok. I also had a core biopsy last yr on my breast, mico calcifications and wondered the same? as I've read core biopsy might be a bit more of concern? I sure hope they are correct as I have "hurthle cells" in my thyroid and so far they look benign. They do them so often and like Mg sd if its cancerous they will know from the biopsy and take it out!! Biopsies are about the best way to detect any future problems.

I was told at MD Anderson, one of the best cancer hospitals, that FNA does NOT spread cancer cells. I'm sure it is possible that out of the thousands and thousands of FNA's done it might have happened once somewhere, but they do not consider it a problem.

Smile Re: Does FNA spread cancer cells

Thanks everyone for your assurance. You made me feel better about it. I agree with what you said.

Sue, I will let you know the details of my visit. My appointment is at 2:00 and fna is at 4:00. I am about 3 hrs. away. [Jasper] I not believing it is going to be cancer anyway. They make have biopsied this same nodule last yr. I had 4 nodules then over 1 cm. I only have one now. but have numerous small one from 4 to 6 mm. I had hurthle cells last time and i questioned him about it, but he said it was nothing to worry about because I had abundant coloidal [sp] cells.
