Recurring burning rash/hives on body, palms and body itching badly

Our daughter breaks out in a 'hive' like rash about once a year, sometimes more often, ---it becomes so severe that she uses bottles of various lotions like Sarna, etc. to relieve the itching and burning (even sores develop behind her knees). Her hands itch so badly and turn very red. She gets 'whelps' like hives sometimes over her back and especially her ankles and legs. She's seen a dermatologist, an internist etc. No allergies that have been pinpointed and she takes meds for her thyroid and was told it was related to her thyroid problems. It lasts for weeks sometimes. She even gets sores on her ankles and the backs of her knees. Anyone here have a clue or a suggestion as to a treatment and/or what it might be? thanks Yanksgirl

Re: Recurring burning rash/hives on body, palms and body itching badly

If it is related to her thyroid, - [and it isn't always so easy to tell.] - the hives are likely due to TPO antibodies, which cause the autoimmune disease that destroys the thyroid gland. Sometimes TPO antibodies can be reduced up to 40% simply by taking a selenium supplement every day. She can try taking 200 mcgs a day for about a month, then reduce to 100 mcgs a day thereafter. This doesn't always work; but it's so easy, it's surely worth a try.
Buy selenium in any major vitamin department or store.

Everytime I have an appointment with thyroid specialist, one of the workup questions is always," Have you had any itching". I am hypo and I wondered if it was a symptom of hypo or if he was asking to see if I was going hyper?

I'm hypo with Hashi's and have always had terrible itching whether from the dry skin but it feels more internal.

The itching can refer to AI skin attack or just general dry skin that thyroids inspire. All in all thyroid testing and adding selenium if it is not already in supplements being consumed is a good idea.

Go to this post. I was just researching and sharing information on TPOAb there. It probably is more information than you were after, but it never hurts to be informed. I have hives and swelling and all over skin inflamation. Elidel and metrogel are the like liquid gold for my face. I have a 2 steriodal cream coctail for my body and use some OTC stuff as well. Hopefully the dermatoilogist has done a contact allergen study on her so that she can avoid contact allergens as well. I had to dump and research and buy all new, deodorant, make up and bath products. Cobalt, nickle, propylene glycol and a few others realy put a damper on the good economy priced products.

Let us know what is working for you all and how things are going.

Re: Recurring burning rash/hives on body, palms and body itching badly

Oh wow, I am happy to have found this posting. I have hypo/hashi's with nasty itching, redness and just thought it was 'me'!! I am not alone, whew.
I even went for a check up with the family doctor who when she saw the rash exclaimed' what is THAT'? First time I see this doc, so I suppose she can be excused?!
I put OTC cortisone cream when it is really distressing, but now I will take the selenium which is sitting on the counter. Good luck to all us 'rashers'
