Question Standard dosage of Levothyroxine T4 for Hypothyroidism?

I read a book that said that the dosage of L-T4( Synthyroid, or other brands) is 1.4-1.6 ug/kg (measured weight). Is it true?

That is to say that if one person's weight is 60kg, her/his dosage of Levothyroxine L-T4 for treatment should be 60*1.4/1.6=84ug/96ug.

Would the dosage be determined by/ related to one's weight??

Cool Re: Standard dosage of Levothyroxine T4 for Hypothyroidism?

My books talk about weight (in US) and some amount of medicine per pound if you're of NORMAL size. UK weight system is ug/kg (<-I know NOTHING about it) where as US is mcg's / lbs.

I believe it's just a guideline. Some people are more sensitive to the meds, so they need less. How you FEEL & the labs being optimal should be more important that what dose you take. Here in US, I think some Doc have trouble going above 150 mcg's REGARDLESS (s-SIGH!)

Wink Re: Standard dosage of Levothyroxine T4 for Hypothyroidism?

I found a reason for that (my personal assumption) , if one is over-weight, that means his/her hypothyroidism is severe, so he/she needs more medcine according to the formula

You are very true. But as long as the blood test of TSH/FT4 is of normal range, is it correct that one should take the medicine as little as possible? Over-medication/treatment could be very harmful to the heart and bones of Hypothyroidism sufferers.

My another confusion is if the self-tested basal temperature could be one indication/benchmark for the accurately appopriate dose of medicine or not.

I've been on this Hypo-THYROID Rollcoaster 30+ months. The main problem I have is doctors just getting me AT or into n o r m a l - then no longer HEARING my complaints, not optimizing me! (T4 = .8-1.8 the HIGHEST I've been is 1.0 & Dr doesn't seem to CARE that I don't feel right) As Thy meds is something I'll have to take the rest of MY LIFE, I don't see WHY I have to live the next 30 YEARS feeling like I'm working on 65% of what I used to be.

So I'll agree that NORMAL is fine if patient feels GOOD
