novocaine & hyperthyroid

I'm supposed to get surgery on my foot tomorrow, and they are supposed to numb my foot, I'm assuming with novocaine. I've heard novocaine can be a problem with hyperthyroid - my hyperthyroid has been in remission for about a year, and I of course don't want to do anything to cause problems. Anyone have experience with this? What do I do? Just take the pain?? Thanks...

Re: novocaine & hyperthyroid

I don't know about novacaine & hyperthyroid. What I do know is that some b/p meds particularly lebetalol ( an alpha/beta blocker) will interact with novacaine & dramatically lower b/p. I am on a very high dose of lebetalol & had to lower my dose in half for two wks after having a tooth removed. Then recently I had a type of novacaine when I had a biospy (skin) & got pretty weak afterwards. Make sure you take someone with you to drive. Fam

Re: novocaine & hyperthyroid

I may be a little late and hope you haven't already left but there is novocaine with no epinephrine for people like us. It's the epinephrine that's a problem. It can increase the heart rate and hypers are more sensitive to that.

Under the list of allergies, put NO EPI in there. When they pull out the needle and before they stick you, ask if there's epi in there. Some docs don't read the chart.
