Question Please please explain....

Ok, so, about a month ago, i was feeling down and tired. My doc said I want to take a blood test for your thyroid, i said ok. well when it came back, it was positive for hyperthyroid. so he did it again, same results. He did once more, same results. So he did the radioactive iodine uptake scan.... Positive again. So my doc says, you need to have it radiated. I said no, i want to talk to a specialist. FIne. I go to see the specialist, she looks at all my results and i request meds before she even gets a chance to say radio iodine. Thats fine she said, we'll try that first. she wants to do more blood work before I leave the office. she does, and it is NEGATIVE. she says no more meds, i am fine! can someone please explain this to me, because it happened 3 years ago. blood work came back positive however the scan showed no signs. why is this happening? any idea's would be great, i mean could you imagine me listening to my first docter and going right for the radioactive iodine right off the bat! man, i got lucky!

shannon

Re: Please please explain....

wow. it's a good thing you went for another opinion. i don't know why with repeated tests it would show positive and then another doc says negative.

if i were you, i'd get copies of ALL your labwork (that is very strongly recommended in general on this thyroid board), so you can see your numbers and ranges for yourself. i also suggest you get copies of your scan test findings as well. you need to see for yourself what the doctors are looking at.

you need to do some more investigating to find out why this has happened, especially since it has happened 3 years ago and could happen again.

i don't like how a doctor pushes for radioactive iodine before trying meds first, btw. i think thats a bad sign.

put on your detective hat and get all your records!

Re: Please please explain....

How long was it between seeing your GP and your Endo? What tests came back positive? Did they do antibodies tests or just run of the mill TSH? Sounds odd that if the scan showed up positive that they're no longer planning on treating?

If you had Hashimotos, that can send you between HypO and HypER so it could be that you were on the switch when Endo tested, again this depends on the tests performed.

As per scoots reply - get a copy of all tests done and the results and you'll have more of an idea of whats going on.
