2nd biopsy in 6 months, is this the norm?

I had a fna in january that came back benign. With my history of breast cancer my endo just wanted to make sure that nothing was missed and so today I had another fna on a 2cmx3cm complex nodule. The dr doing the biopsy said that he saw nothing in the sample to indicate thyroid cancer so try not to worry. They also said that it will require ultra sounds every 6 months to make sure it isnt growing. My only other option is to have half my thyroid removed. This sounds drastic but would ensure that if it is cancer we would get it out. Just wondering if anyone else chose to have their thyroid removed after a benign biopsy.

Re: 2nd biopsy in 6 months, is this the norm?

With breast cancer, you must find the cancer ASAP, and if it spreads, it's very dangerous, and you must act fast in the hopes of preventing that.

With thyroid cancer, it is very slow growing, and even if it does spread, it's usually within the same area, and it is treated the same whether it spread or not. It is not a deadly disease.

So, it's pretty normal for doctors to recommend a revisit to the nodule in 6 months. If you feel any changes or growth, go earlier, but if you waited 6 months, it's normal to observe it for a while.

Yes, the only way to know for sure is to remove it, but there's no emergency rush to do that. Most are benign.
