Wish I could delete this post of mine and put it after the one below about length of time to get your results. Deleting can't be done.

I've found by searching about Radioactive Tracers for thyroid ultrasound testing that different places evidently may use different amounts? There are also some posts about this in the archives sticky thread. I have a couple of questions still unanswered.

1. Has anyone with lens implants (after cataract surgery) and/or advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy had thyroid ultrasound testing using the radioactive tracer and was there any effect on vision?

2. In the archives instructions about not contaminating others for 2 or 3 days, discarding your toothbrush, etc., there's nothing about not contaminating your car, driving home, that I could see. I will have to read it all again. Meanwhile, has anyone had the experience? I just have the prescription for the test, thyroid swelling, wasn't told there would be anything radioactive.

I think each clinic/hospital might be a little different so I don't know the norm. When I had my ultrasound I had it done in the morning and by late afternoon my doctor called me to let me know the results.

Thank you for all of your replies! I finally got my blood test results & ultrasound results. My blood work was "normal" however I do have a cyst on my thyroid. I have been referred to an oncologist for a biopsy.

Re: how long does it take to get ultrasound results back on a thyroid

Thyroid cysts are even more rarely cancerous than a solid nodule, and a solid nodule has a 95% chance of being benign.

Why are they sending you to an oncologist? They are not surgical, and they are not recommended even if you did have thyroid cancer (I had thyroid cancer and my case is managed by an endocronologist).

See an ENT/ear nose throat surgeon, who can either do or refer you for a biopsy, or and endocronologist (some of these do biopsies, and if not, they will refer you to the right place).

Unless you are under the care of an oncologist for other issues, it will be a waste of time to see one for a thyroid cyst at this point.

Re: how long does it take to get ultrasound results back on a thyroid

That is what I was thinking! My GP gave me the doctor's name & referred to him as a "specialist." I assumed that "specialist" meant an endo dr. I then "googled" his name and discovered that he is an oncologist. I have never been to any type of specialist before. I asked questions regarding the results (how many cysts? fluid or solid?) I was told that the "specialist" will discuss the results with me. I hope there isn't something horribly wrong. It took a week for them to give me my ultrasound results, when I was told I would have them the next day! I am worried!

Re: how long does it take to get ultrasound results back on a thyroid

You really have nothing wrong at all to be alarmed about, but your doctor is clueless, so he's sending you the wrong way.

Actually, there's more to worry about when they call you immediately after an ultrasound, but not when it takes longer when expected---and by the way, with thyroids, nothing is an emergency.

Usually the term "cyst" refers to a fluid fill lump, and a solid would be referred to as a "nodule"---it's really common to have these, and they are usually nothing to worry about. Cysts can come an go, and they are usually not cancerous. Nodules on the thyroid can even come and go too, and they are usually nothing.

Get copies of your results, and bloodwork if you have any, and make an appt, with the endocronologist, or ent, and bring everything, and in the meantime, put your mind at ease, nothing here will kill you, and have a fun weekend.

Thank you for the info & kind words! I appreciate it! They actually called it a "cystic nodule." Which doesn't clear ANYTHING up! Lol! Thanks again, & you too have a nice weekend!

Re: how long does it take to get ultrasound results back on a thyroid

So glad you got some answers.

I suppose you're too concerned this weekend about your unexplained results to tell us if you had to take any precautions about the tracer radiation for two or three days and I suppose that nobody else remembers that detail either.

Re: how long does it take to get ultrasound results back on a thyroid

I had a regular ultrasound and blood testing for my TSH levels. From those results it was suggested that I get a biopsy. There has been no talk so far of radioactive anything. I have an apoitment with a surgeon for a consultation 3 weeks from now.
