Need help with TSH lab results

I finally got my lab results from my reg doc. She did a TSH test and the results were 0.79 (0.42-5.47 ulU/mL). I have no idea what this means. Reg doc says this is normal. I don't feel normal and I have an appt with an endo on Monday, but I would like to go into the appt with at least some knowledge of what these test results mean. I have many other symptoms (listed below) which make me suspect hypothyroidism or Hashimotos:

weight gain that won't go away
dry skin
severe dry eyes
scratchy husky voice
always tired
extreme hot or cold when others aren't
hives breakouts for no reason and won't go away with benadryl
decreased sex drive
irregular periods
joint pain
etc etc etc

thanks for any help you can give me!

Re: Need help with TSH lab results

One TSH test - especially one that appears as normal as yours - is meaningless. It simply isn't enough to tell you anything. Your free thyroid hormone levels - free T4/T3 - also need to be measured. They could be insufficient even though the TSH appears "normal". Also useful - TPO and Tg antibody testing. If you have thyroid antibodies, they can suppress TSH to that dreaded "normal" area of the range. Antibody titers confirm Hashimoto's disease.

The problem is that most endos believe TSH is gospel when it comes to thyroid health. If the one you'll be seeing is a TSH-worshipper, he may refuse the free T4/T3 and antibody tests you need. I hope he's better than the standard endo, though, and that you get the attention you deserve.

Let us know.
