enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

45yrs old with fibroids 2yrs. now. Had a endometrial ablation one year ago for excessive bleeding and large clots. My blood count level had dropped to 8. I am still having my periods they never stopped. Bleeding is less. The worst of it all now is the extreme pressure in my bladder and rectum. I also have some rectocele issues. Any advice. My Gyn has scheduled another sonogram to compare to the one I had a year ago. He tells me the choice of hysterectomy is my call???

Re: enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

Robin,

It is very common for women to have enlarged uterus and fibroids in our 40's and into our 50's. It is quite common to have excessive bleeding as we head towards menopause. Very normal but can be a real pain.......when our estrogen starts droping it shrinks our fibroids so they naturally calcify and go away.....if they are too big you can have an ablation or have a myomectomy where they cut you like a c section and just take the fibroids out. Women have it done all the time expecially if they still want to concieve. They just go in and take the fibroid out.......That's if you do not want a hyster... I am not big on hysterectomies unless really necessary but you may be leaning towards one. Sounds like you are uncomfortable.

It is being left up to you because he sees it as precautionary and not necessary.
You may also need a A and P repair for that rectocele and to just get everything back up into place.....A current ultrasound is definately needed.

Good luck and I hope you get feeling better..

Sounds like the same problems we have with our Thyroidectomies...sometimes the decision is left up to us.........Hard to make.

Re: enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

Thank you so much for your reply. I am very much against the hysterectomy because I feel it will be opening up a whole "New Can of Worms" as they say. Although the pressure and pain some days makes it hard to deal with. I wish my GYN would suggest another option. Birth control pills are not an option because of my HB. I just wish I knew how close to Menopause I am. Would you seek a second opinion? I've been seeing my GYN for 10yrs or more.

Re: enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

Robin,

You are welcome.......You might want to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist. I would get a 2nd opinion definately. Ask for copies of your labwork and you can get a copy of your ultrasound from the hospital. Sometimes it is good to have fresh eyes look at you.

You need to make sure the pressure you are feeling is actually from the fibroid. The ultrasound should tell.

How far you are from Menopause ? Normal age is 51. I am 55 and still not in menopause. I can tell I am getting there. Some people go in younger than 50 when they start in.....

Let us know what happens........share the US results..........Oleander

Re: enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

Sorry it has taken so long. I finally had the sonogram and the doctor says that the fibroids have not grown much at all. My Doctor did say that my uterus was quite enlarged. What could cause this if the fibroids are not growing much. The uterus being enlarged would explain the frequent bladder problem and pressure. I am very uncomfortable with pain and pressure during intercourse in my bladder and rectum. I know I have rectocele issues as well but the Doctor does not seem to think its to serious. I just don't know what to do at this point. The day I went back to see my Doctor he checked me, and that was it. No sonogram or nothing. He just said to see how things went in a month or so. The next evening I had a voice mail from him personally saying to call the office the next day. Very strange, I've never had him call. It's always the nurses. He personally called me back and said he wanted me to come in for the sonogram he wanted to look at the fibroids and uterus. I just found that a little odd. Why didn't he do that or suggest that the first visit?? Any thoughts??? Thank you for listening.

Re: enlarged uterus w/ fibroids

Sometimes they go over charts and maybe he was reviewing your chart and thought he should have done this on your return visit......sounds like he is being thorough......See what he says when you go in. Some Doctors really do pick up the phone ( Like they all used too) and make calls themselves sometimes. I think he thinks he should have done this at your last visit. Just my thought on it. And he should have done another US......just to be sure.

Let us know....... Oleander
